Question about Rustoleum Rust-Oleum 1030-402 402 Green Aluminum Industrial Enamel 1 Gallon 2 GAL I

1 Answer

The sun is so harsh on wood windowsills they crack in a couple of years and have to be repainted. Someone told me to use aluminum oil based paint on them prior to painting them. All I found is 402 ALUMINUM Industrial ENAMEL by Rust-Oleum. Is this the one I need?

Usually when you have cracking on your windows, there's several variables including sunlight. One of the biggest problems is using the incorrect primer or a cheap paint. Contrary to what many believe, a primer that dries extremely hard is not ideal for exterior surfaces. Wood expands and contracts with heat, cold and moisture. A high quality latex primer, topped with a high quality exterior latex paint will give you the best results. It allows for flexibility but offers great protection. Some prefer an oil/alkyd based primer. This is fine as long as it's a slow drying primer. The quick drying primers have hardeners in them that don't flex well. Be sure to remove any loose and flaking paint before you prime them. There are places where you can cut corners with painting. I wouldn't do it on exterior paint. One last thing to be aware of- be sure it's not lead paint you're working with. That changes everything.

Methods how to do white washing on pine wood?

First use a stain blocking primer such as Killz. If it is an item that is outside use a good exterior paint two coats. Inside items use interior paint two coats. Don't use exterior paint inside cause it can contain pesticides that can cause harm to you. Pine will seep sap for a few years so you may need to repaint sooner than usual.

Used filler for filling nail heads rubbed back next day perfect two weeks later painted wattyl undercoat water base and filler went soft

The wood filler, a water based product, pulled the water out of the latex paint and softened. To preclude this in the future, you can cover these repairs with shellac or another sealant to provide a barrier between the filler and the paint. Spray shellac is available in hardware stores, and is used on water stained ceilings before repainting.

How best to prepare painting over oil based varnish

The best bet is to leave the oil poly on the treads clean it up and refinish it .
However if you need to paint for what ever reason I would recomand grinding back to wood its a lot of work pine or oak treads .
But the problem is stairs get a lot of LBS. per sq/in .In a small area of the tread and depeneding on how high of a traffic area it is nothing will stick to oil poly or varnish.
Strip them and go with an epoxy system .
And by the way I have running comerical paint jobs for 40 years

I want to get a wooden outdoor bench, but what about weather damages overtime?

If you prefer wood, then you should definitely go for the long lasting woods like Eucalyptus, cedar and teak. If you like metal benches, make sure they are painted in water resistant color and that they are also rust resistant.

I painted a picnic bench with latex, and it peeled. I scraped off some of it, and much is left on. Is oil base paint over this a good solution?

Hi there. Try to remove as much of the old paint as possible. You should sand down the wood and paint a little bit to rough up the wood and only then paint over it. Paint sticks much better to roughed up wood. Oil based paint would also be a better solution. The best solution is to use stain, if that's an option. Alex

My 2005 Hyundai Elantra looks disgusting. The clear paint is peeling off all over the back section of the car. This car is electric blue, and not yet 6 years old! What has caused this. Paint/panel guys...

Deterioration of the clearcoat can be caused from several things, not the least of which is the environment, such as acid rain or air polution. Usually it is caused from lack of maintenance, such as not using a protective wax or polish regularly. I have seen instances where too much polishing with a power buffer caused the clearcoat to wear away. Or it could just be a poor factory paint job. Lots of those around. Shop around for a good price on repaint. Where I am from, there is a paint and body business call MAACO that will repaint a car very cheaply. Their paint jobs don't last more than a couple of years, but they look really good when fresh. You may find someone who paints cars as a hobby, or second income. They usually do decent work for little profit. Check the want ads and local bulletin boards. You may be surprised at how affordable a new paint job can be.

What is the best way to remove oxidation from a fiberglass kayak. The color is very faded from years of direct sun exposure. Kayak is >15years old. I want to restore the original color and luster.

There is really no easy way short of sanding lightly and repainting. (I am told that "tremclad" paint intended for exterior use on metal in tough situations is good for this kind of thing.)

Wax (car wax or wax for fibreglass boats--which is often available in colour) will work for the short term.

I have a cast iron wood stove that needs to have enamel repaired

They actually sell ceramic paint to repaint these. It should be available at your local hardware store. I repainted a claw foot bathtub with the ceramic paint kit and it looks like new again. If this helps please leave feedback...
