Question about Broan-NuTone Dryers

2 Answers

I have a Nutone 9093n. The exhaust fan and light work fine. The heater did work fine but has quit. I am not sure how to troubleshoot. The wiring appears in very good condition and the heating elements are not burnt out. I would appreciate any offers of help so I can determine if I should buy parts or just replace the entire 9093n. Thanks, Jim

SOURCE: heater doesn't work

You can purchase heating elements for this fan that will solve the problem. This is a fairly new fan model so I would recommend calling Nutone because this model has a three year warranty. They may send you the part you need for free.

SOURCE: where can I get the motor unit to replace?

The motor is a common item to need replacement in bathroom vents. Replacements can be found just about anywhere that deals with electric motors. You might even be able to get a replacement where you originally purchased the unit. There are dozens of web sites that you can locate a replacement. is just one. Simply do a web search on replacement bathroom vent motors. Also if the are able to purchase items from wholesale vendors you can get one from Grainger's. It should cost around $20 to $25
Part # 62345-000 (replacement motor part #).

However there is an alternative to replacement. This depends entirely on how handy you are with these kinds of things and how bad off the motor is. If your not comfortable with repairing this kind of thing don't bother with the rest of this.

I hate to replace anything that may be repairable. Unfortunately my friends know this and recently one asked me to look at his NuTone bathroom vent motor before he replaced it.
For the cost in time of an hour I was able to refurbished it.
A good way to check if it's a candidate for repair is to check how much play is in between the shaft and bushings. If you can feel movement then it's best to go ahead and replace it. If the problem is that the shaft is tight and just hard to turn then it may just need some cleaning and fresh lubrication.
The steps are simple. Once you have the motor removed from the vent cage you will see a pair of nuts and bolts holding two brackets in place. These brackets(one on either side of the coil) are what hold the shaft centered and house the bushings. Remove the bolts and the brackets. Be careful not to lose any of the washers on the shaft. These are spacers and need to be replace the same way they went on if they come off. All you need to do is clean both ends of the shaft put a little oil on the shaft and in the bushing and put it back together. If the motor has a plug and not just bare wires for reconnecting to the power supply then it's safe to just plug it in to any outlet for testing after you remount it in the vent cage. You will know right away if you were successful.

Hope this helps.

Hunt for a tripped GFCI and push reset. The ground fault protected receptacle may be in a nearby bedroom, hall, or basement.

Old NuTone 9093n Model replacement.?

Hi -- I just spent a couple of days taking out the old assembly, cleaning all the parts (layers of dust coats) and putting the 9093N back in order to fix the noisy fan. The cold air coming back in is from to the heating and I'd guess the heating element is busted. Yes, you can run it in both airflow modes: ceiling air exhaust and hot air blown to the floor. That said, the noise level on mine hasn't gone down. So I'll look for the replacement assembly. Good luck!

Ceiling fan not working. How do I remove the fan to see if the vent is clogged?

Usually the cover pulls down, and is suspended on wires.
Push together the wires to release cover.
Use vacuum to clean.
Dissemble using screwdriver if possible. Some newer fans are one-piece and cannot be taken apart.
See if fan turns on.
Open wire cover and inspect wires.
Use non-contact tester to see if unit has power when switch is turned on.
See if switch is good.
If fan does not turn on, then wires are loose, switch is bad, fan motor is bad.
Some fan motors are sold separately, and some are not, and whole unit has to be removed from between the joists, and new fan installed.

Model 100HFL...with the light switched on I turn on the exhaust fan and the light dims a bit and the exhaust fan works. with the light switched on I turn on the heater and the light goes completely dark. ...

I'm not sure what is going on without full and complete description of wiring and switches:
Add a comment with exact information for possible help.
Specs say 20 amp circuit is needed: so 20 amp circuit breaker + 12 gauge wire are required.
Heater uses 1500 watts, so it pulls a lot of power if same circuit breaker is used for several other rooms and a TV etc. Turn off everything else and see if problem persists.
Sell sheet for product says: Energy efficient lighting - uses one 27-watt (max.) high efficiency GU24 based fluorescent lamp.
Turn off power, and disconnect ground wire. Turn power back on and switch on the heater-lite and see if there is a fault to ground.
Use a different switch.

It does not matter whether the power goes to the fan unit or to the switch box, you still need 3 insulated wires going between the switich and the fan, and the ground wire as a 4th wire. If power is at switch, you will have white as nuetral feed to fan and 2 blacks (or a red and a black) one each to bring power for light and power for fan or heater element. ( if so equiped). If power is to fan unit, the white wire must have a piece of colored tape (red, orange, blue, brown) and this whtie wire is attached to the black power wire. The tape shows that this is not a neutral. The tape has to be at both ends of the white. Now, the other 2 wires (blk & blk or red & blk) can be atteched to the switch and carry the elec. to the fan light, blower, and or heater. Goodluck, Macgivor
