SOURCE: I get the following message
Are you getting the message from front panel of the printer or on the PC?
If from printer
check if printer can print test page by going to set up then go to printer status report
check if printer can make a copy as standalone
power cycle the printer
if still unresolved
restore the printer to factory defaults by checking to set up>tools>restore factory defaults
If from the PC
click on the black printer icon on your desktop
click on activate scan to pc
then try scanning again
if issue persist go to the link below
download the scan diagnostic utility
it can fix scan issues when it comes to software
