SOURCE: load tray message
I remedied this a few times for a client...
If someone queues a print job in another size, let's say legal, instead of letter, the printer will cache that job as 1st in line until it is loaded with legal paper. I initialized the NVRAM of the printer and that took care of it every time.

give this a try
Load a piece of thick paper, for example photo paper and press the resume button (may be diffrent button on diffrent models) a few times to the printer picks up the paper and puts it through the machine.

Open the back cover and look for paper wrapped around a roller back there. That is the most common cause of the issues with this machine. The other thing you can try is to push down on the little flaps where the paper comes out of the printer. These get stuck and need cleaning/replacement all the time in the later life of these models (1720's).

The paper tray itself is probably missing a small peice. Look towards the front of the tray... there is a guide (about 2" wide) that, if you push down, it springs back and forth. My tray was missing a small peice of flat metal that popped off. The feed roller rests on this piece when the tray is loaded. If the piece is missing, then the roller is to close and the paper cannot make it through into the printer. Still looking for the part number....
