Why does my pilot light keep going out when heating is on ?

Water heater and house heater are sharing the same vent?
Then vent is bad, and heater is pushing combustion by-product down into the water heater and blowing out pilot.
Call technician immediately to avoid CO poisoning.
Look for black soot on top of water heater... test the vent:

Turn on the pilot , when turn on the burnes evreting off

Hi there.
Ensure that the gas supply pressure is sufficient and the thermopile should be free of soot or any form of dirt, also the pilot flame should heat up the thermopile efficiently.
Regards.

The pilot light takes a long time to light, once lit it barely has but a small blue flame, what is the problem?

Ensure that the unit receives the standard gas pressure as rated on its nameplate.
Pilot orifice may be partially plugged or has some dirt on it, You have to dismantle the whole pilot assembly to gain access in cleaning the pilot orifice. Be careful not to enlarge the orifice bore in cleaning for that will only result to poor pilot flame quality.
The thermopile must be free of soot or soot form of dirt in order to detect the right amount of heat from the pilot flame so that it could also, in turn generate the right amount of voltage needed by the gas valve for pilot and burner operation.

Regards.

My pilot flame is too high . What could be causing this ?

If it's an Atwood and just recently started burning a yellow, higher flame, look closely at side of fitting where the pilot tube is attached to mounting bracket. You should see a very small hole in the side of that fitting. Take a paper clip, or something as small in diameter, and poke around inside that hole to clean it out, or shut pilot off, and use compressed air, to blow into it, to clean it out. Now re-lite your pilot and see if you have a nice blue flame now. That little hole is your air mixture for the pilot and sometimes debris clogs it, thus causes (rich mixture) yellow/red flame, which will also cause soot build-up in the chamber, or even on outside cover. Let me know if that cures it.

Propane kitchen-oven ''whoofs''

Propane burns very dirty,I bet the burner and pilot are clogged with soot.In techinical terms the sound your hearing is blowback. If you check the burner/pilot you will likley see black soot, remove them and clean with soap and water.
