Zoom lens won't fully retract

When I turn the camera on the zoom lens goes about 3/4 of the way out. It will go ahead and extend all the way out when I hit the zoom button but the lens will not retract when I use the zoom button. It will however retract all the way when I turn the camera off. Thanks in advance for your help.

Lens error, restart camera

Lens error is usually caused by mechanical faults concerning lens assembly. The lens cannot extend or retract fully, the error is detected and lens error is returned.
Sometimes this can be fixed playing with the lens during extraction or retraction to help the lens asset getting back to normal.
More often the camera lens must be disassembled and re-assembled by a technician to fix the problem.

Cannon G7 need help

Hi
Had the same problem a few months ago. There was a high pitchedwhisltle and I think the screen said "lens fault.turn off camera" or something similar.Bought a G9 to replace as the 7 was out of guarantee but sent the 9 back to the e-bay reseller as it was obviously secondhand with grit around the lens ring and the viewfinder.Ebay never again!.So 3 months ago ago I tried the G7 again with a fresh charged battery before I consigned the camera to the loft.I noticed that each time i switched on the whistle and message was there but the lens extended slightly further each timeso I kept rebooting until the lens was fully extended.Turned the camera off and on again and everything was back to normal. It seems that this may be Canons protocol when a camera goes back. Its been absolutely fine until today. It wont boot up at all.I have tried 2 fresh charged batteries and its dead.Any ideas anyone?

Problem

I had the same problem and fixed it.
The problem is related to the lens not working properly and jammed up.
When powering on the camera, the focus goes in and out and the lens spin and then the message is displayed to turn camera off. When I turn the camera off, I noticed the lens did not fully hiberate into the camera like it did before the error message.

So to fix the problem I did the following:
Turn the camera on, when the lens extended out, I slightly rotated the outer most lens clockwise and counterclockwise to free the lens from the jammed position.

The error no longer appeared and the camera stayed-on.When I shut the power-off the lens completely hibernated again like normal.

Hope this helps.

Lens barrell doesn't retract for zooming out, only for shutting off.

Hello, Sounds like you have a drive motor/gear assembly malfunction, this type of failure is costly to repair.

Generally speaking, there is nothing you can do to correct the problem other than to send the camera to the appropriate factory service center for correction of the error. Following the repair cost you should decide, whether it worth it.
