Meezy, that plate is called a "wave guide cover" and it's shorted out for a reason, (the part number is WB06X10541 and it appears to be a Factory order part). The reason it's shorted is probably due to a failed magnetron, the component used to create the microwaves. The magnetron carries a 10 year warranty from GE. Call 1-800-GECARES for a warranty repair. You'll need the complete model and serial numbers... they are on a sticker inside the microwave. Hope this helps!

Actually, in most cases, this is a simple, do-it-yourself fix. If the arcing has not been going on too long, you probably don't have any trouble with the magnetron yet. What happens is grease and/or food particles build up on and behind the cover and will eventually arc. If it is not cleaned (or replaced if damaged) then eventually it will lead to damage to the cavity and possbily to the magnetron. If the cover is held in place by a nylon rivet, carefully remove it. Then pull the cover out. Clean both sides with warm soapy water, rinse and dry completely. Be sure the cavity behind the cover is clean, too. Be careful since the metal edges may be sharp. If the cover is charred or burned, it will have to be replaced. You can find one here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383 If the oven cavity is charred, it will need to be cleaned, sanded and touched up with high temperature allpiance paint, available from most home centers, etc. Please reply back if you still have questions. I appreciate your thoughtful reply. Good luck.

Flashing and buzzing in microwave while operating.

This sounds like carbon build up reacting to RF energy. You need to find where the burn spot is and correct it. It's probably behind or on the waveguide cover usually on the right side of the oven cavity. It looks like a brownish-tan plate about 2-3 inches by 4-5 inches. It's actually made out of mica or plastic. If you can't find the source of this problem, it may be inside the waveguide in which case the unit is not really repairable.

THe buzzing noise is most likely coming from the magneton. The magnetron is the main component of the unit (it generates the microwaves). Replaceing it can be very expensive. You may be better off getting a new oven. Prices for new microwave ovens have dropped significantly.

Oh dear, I hope the magnetron still works. That plate you describe is called the Waveguide Cover. This cover must be kept clean otherwise the food particles will carbonize and cause exactly what you have described.
Contact the manufacturers web site for a supplier in your area or look on ebay, espares.co.uk depending on your location.
When it has been changed, I hope the magnetron/aerial is OK.

The magnetron tube which makes the microwaves is behind that cover plate, and it has gone bad. It is a replaceable part, but it's not worth the cost. Part and labor would be more than a new oven. It's time to treat yourself to a new oven.

Buzzing noise and flashing

Some units have a silica plate covering the waveguide opening. If it get burn spots on it, it'll do that. Remove the plate and try the unit. If it's OK, go to your MW repair shop and order a new plate.

My Microwave flickers and buzzes

This problem normaly happens when the door is not closed properly for a long time and flashing and buzzing starts to give user a indication for same. Allthough it is not risky as microwave oven has safty door switches wich does not allow oven to operate while door is open. Take care and close the door properly before you leave kitchen..
