Question about Kenmore Elite HE4 Electric Dryer
Unplug your dryer and turn off the gas. Open up the back of the machine, and if you can do this at night or if your in a low light room, turn the lights off, (you should be in dark now) (have a working flashlight in your hand). Once the back is off the unit, and you have positioned everything so your not tripping over components of the dryer, you got your flashlight in hand, plug in the dryer again, hit the start button (do not turn on gas) and let the unit run for a little while, (no lights, do not turn on flash light now) while your watching any wires or components near wires, that might start to glow RED. If you see no glowing,, then then turn your flashlight on and search the interior of the whole machine for blackening componets, from a electrical short or from possible flame or pressurized heat being blown from the unit through a cracked cover or tubing. Also check the unit for any discolored wires.
Once you have discovered the source of the heat in relationship to the wires, replace the wire, replace the defective tubing or if the wires are just leaning, touching, a hot surface, then bend the wires so that they are safely away from the heat source. Try and figure out why the wires got close to the heat source. Sometimes Cats, or Rodents like to hide in the back of dryers and they gnaw on wires and push them around while they are making a nest or place to sleep. Simply use common sense, do not discount anything, and expect anything. Good luck... Oh yes, since you have the dryer out, take your ducting hose and clean it thoroughly. Fires in the home are a main source in dryers due to lint not being completely blown out of the unit and safely away from the heat source.

The only source of a gas leak from inside the dryer itself is the gas valve. They can sometimes leak a little gas when you first turn the gas on after hooking it up. If your gas pressure is normal (and I'm guessing the plumber checked it) and your other gas appliances are working properly, the dryer gas valve is faulty and should be checked by a qualified appliance servicer.

You first thought was probably the correct one...the fumes from the new paint may take a few days to disspate enough not to react with the heat of the dryer...I would give it a few dyas to clear before looking any further...
