Question about Honda Gx390 Motor Inside Cover

I put a coil on and didn't leave air gap between coil and flywheel now it won't fire would this ruin the coil

No, you just need to put a gap of .025 between the coil and flywheel and everything should be fine, if the engine won't turn at all, it's not the coil that's the problem

Assume you are asking for the air gap between the flywheel and the ignition coil?

Obtaining the correct gap from the manufacturer's specifications is best because although in theory a close gap is desirable for efficiency, flywheels grow as the engine heats up and a large flywheel can grow quite a lot.

Brass feeler gauges are best for setting air gaps as they are none-magnetic. A typical air gap would be in the region of 10 to 14 thou.

the coil is on the flywheel side of unit. remove the recoil cover and you will see the flywheel and coil. your have to remove the ground wire from shut off switch and two bolts holding coil in place. when installing new coil you need to leave a 10 thousand air gap between the coil leg and the flywheel magnet for proper operation

CLOSE! put two pieces of paper against the Flywheel, then put the Coil in place loosely. rotate flywheel until magnets hold the coil to the flywheel ( with paper in between) then tighten

Replaced coil an still no fire out of wire kill wire is not hooked up


Hello,
My name is Dane and I am going to help you solve your problem. Ok, there aren't many things that can cause you a problem here. First, I have to say to check that spark plug. Make sure it's correctly gapped and not cracked or fouled. Now, check that the flywheel is clean and rustfree. Make sure you have set the coil gap correctly.

To set the gap for the coil, get a regular business card and use it as a feeler gauge. Turn the flywheel so the flywheel magnets are away from the coil. Loosen the bolts to the coil, and pull the coil back, making the gap as large as possible. Rotate the flywheel so the magnets are next to the coil. Slide the business card in between the coil and the flywheel magnets and loosen the coil bolts. If your coil has 2 legs, make sure the business card is under them both. Make sure the coil is even and just snug against the card. Now tighten down your coil bolts and spin the flywheel to remove the business card. Turn the flywheel at least 1 complete turn and make sure it doesn't contact the coil. You're done!!! Put it back together and try it again. It's not unheard of to get a bad new coil. Don't think just because it's new it has to be good.

You should have a strong, blue sparlk. Make sure plug is grounded to engine when you test. Don't do it in the air. Check the flywheel/coil air gap. I think on Briggs it should be about the thickness of a standard business card. If after setting the air gap and there is no spark...plug is bad or ingition coil module is defective. When you adjust the gap, make sure the magnets in the flywheel are lined up with the "legs" on the coil to assure the correct setting.

The plug receives its fire from the coil module which is mounted next to the Flywheel. It will have to be checked. If the unit has a kill switch, the wiring to it needs to be checked too. The important thing about the coil module is that the pickup legs on it need to be about .012" from the magnets that are inside the edges of the flywheel. There's always the possibility the coil has failed, but they don't very often. Check the air gap as stated at the flywheel and make sure there are no bare or chafed wires to the kill switch going to ground somewhere.

Two possibilities left.
You have a short in your stop circuit or bent/out of place component. To check this unhook the small wire on the coil and tuck it out of the way. Put your recoil back on and try to start it. If it starts you need to follow the wire and look for any exposed wire. No exposed wire then you need to follow the mechanical portion of the on/off switch, something is not aligned right or a spring is worn out.

Next check your flywheel to coil air gap. Place a cover of a notebook or a piece of cardboard from a cigarette pack between the flywheel and the coil. This will get you the proper air gap. Then tighten down the coil. If that's not it, you have a bad flywheel. It's very rare but does happen.

Note: while you have the flywheel exposed, clean it up with light grit sandpaper (180 grit or finer) or steel wool. Rust can interfere with the electrical field.

Honda 5.5 hp air comp. no spark wont run


Most honda engines have an oil sensor that prevents the engine from starting if the oil level is low or oil is dirty. Test coil by disconnecting oil sensor wire. With sensor disconnected coil should fire. If still no fire, check kill wire for short. If still no spark, coil may need to be replaced. enjoy
