Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

Memorex MVD2042 Unit worked fine yesterday, but today is not functioning. Standby light does not come on, and no functions work. The unit is receiving power (not an issue with the cord or power supply). I tried following the manufacturer's reset suggestion, but it failed. The fuse appears intact as well. Anyone have suggestions for a fix?

Stuck in Standby

FOr the MVDP1102 Memorex 10.2 portable DVD Player:
I had the same problem. If you open the disc door there is suppose to be a plastic arm underneath the right side of the lid which when you close the lid, with the movie disc in, this arm will press through to a switch inside the machine and that will set the player in load/play mode. Memorex did not have parts for this player, so I unscrewed the bottom and one black screw inside where the lazer light is. This will allow you to handle the bottom back side and see underneath where the screen is you will find the switch. I rigged up a pin wire and did some small drilling. I was successful, but it wasn't easy. Most times I just fail and toss. I thing my son just open the disc door too much and that's how the piece was broken.

My dvd player stopped working and all i want to do at this point is remove my rented dvd.

If you just want to take out a DVD here's what to do:

1.Take off the top cover:
- remove five screws on the back (indicated by little arrows)
- remove two screws on each side (there are only two, this should be obvious)
- when looking at the back of the unit, slide it up and towards you.

You should now be able to see your DVD. However there is a piece covering it.

2. Take off the top of drive:
- remove two screws, (one on each side). They are very small (probably black) and on the top of the cover, on the far left and right. They might be hidden under small rubber squares. If so, just peel the squares off.
- The cover should come right off.
- lift out the disc

3. Reassemble

good luck,

It just stopped working

All, I **w have a second one of these DVD players in my possession, and have found, again, a bad capacitor (C411) in the power supply section. Replacing this discrete component (it is a 1,000 µF, 16V electrolytic capacitor; replace the part with a 1,000 µF 25V (or higher voltage, keep the capacitance, the 1,000 µF, the same, that still fits onto the board) electrolytic capacitor part) has fixed my, will **t power on, suddenly **n-working DVD player, into a working one. Replacing this capacitor with a higher voltage part is probably a good idea: the 16 volt part seems to it a bit undersized, as the top of the can has bulged, a sure sign the maximum voltage of the capacitor has been exceeded for an extended period of time, boiling the electrolye inside and bulging the can.

Total cost was less of this repair was $1.59 and that was at Radio Shack (Part Number 272-1032) for a 1000µF, 35V (20%), Radial-lead electrolytic capacitor. And it fits in the same space as the one removed.

A **te of general use for troubleshooting these types of consumer electronics (read: CHEAP!), assume the least expensive parts went into them, and k**w that the most expensive parts are **t the IC's but the discrete components, and, usually, the most expensive of those compenents are the capacitors. Start there, and look for bulging, leaking and/or corroded parts. These parts should have very flat tops and strainght sides with ** discharge. Any deviation indicates a bad part. This can usually be confirmed with a multimeter continuity tester; they are usually shorted and do **t hold any charge.

Thanks,

J. Roebke.
