Open Question

I have a Snap On YA217A welder and needed to replace the switch- I made a sketch of where the wires connected to the switch and got a new switch however one of my employees threw out the paper I had sketched the location on so I need to find out where the wires go on the switch and was looking for a schematic with the switch to the location of the colored wires- thanks,

SOURCE: SNAP-ON FM140A MIG WELDER. HOW TO SET UP WIREING

Hi, yes it can be ugraded but,( theres always a but,) you will need a feed from the mains to a rated connection on the main fuse box, this is not a DIY job, certain rules and regulations prohibit the unqualified. the new line will run to it's own fuse box, then to wherever you want, garage or w/shop with electrical cable 1.5biger than your max (30 amps) best be safe , you cooker socket is thirty amp, but thats max, there are some people that would increase the fuse size, ending up,( If they arel lucky), for a total re-wire those unlucky guy's arn't around to tell the tale. contact your provider and get it safe.
lets know how you get on

My snap on welder isn't working properly. With the heat dial turned all the way up, I have to turn the wire speed almost all the way down. Even with it in the hottest setting it welds cold. Won't even burn...

I own and love my Snap-On YA-212A and had a similar problem that turned out to be a power issue, not a welder issue. Repair costs and parts availability of these welders can vary wildly, it may be cheaper to replace it with a Lincoln, Miller, or Hobart. Snap-On uses more than one supplier to make their welders, if you tell me the exact model number I can probably tell you who manufactured it,
For now, try the following:
  1. Unplug the welder from the power outlet on the wall
  2. The power cable where it connects to the welder should be a twist lock type, make sure it is not loose. Take it off and look for any signs of arcing that look like it may have been a bad connection
  3. Look at the power connector that plugs into the wall and look for signs of arcing. If possible, take the back off the plug that goes into the wall and ensure that everything looks tight.
  4. Put the power cable back on the welder
  5. If your breaker box has a load controller turn it off and try your welder again
  6. Replace the circuit breaker in the breaker box on your house

My snap-on mig welder powers on fine, wire feeds normally, but I only get a little blue spark and a sizzle when I try to use it

Initial setting it's wrong, you should have a vivid spark. If it just sizzle try to increase your voltage and wire speed.

Lincoln Weld Pak 100 arc welder troubleshooting

There can be a switch that makes the wire electrically "dead" so it can be fed through the liner. Also suitcase style welders have a sensor wire with a clamp that must be connected for the arc to be able to be struck.

Snap on ya219B mig welder. when welding, spark quit working and feed at same time, which usually means overload switch above transformer and in front of fan. when it reset, i get no spark, but feed works....

I have the same problem with my ya219b every year or so. it is the diodes located on the aluminum plate above the transformer. usually they short first and cause the welder to grun and barely weld at all and the they open up and everything works except for welding. when replacing, pay close attention to the polarity of the diodes. there is usually a little schematic symbol printed on it to tell you which is the anode and which is the cathode

Snap On Ya219B No Spark

The transformer has an overtempature switch the shuts the welder down when its duty cycle is exceeded. After it cools, the switch will close and the welder will run again. However, you are not supposed to use the welder until waiting an additional cooling off period as specified in you manual(~10 min.).Also you are not suppose to weld beyond the duty cycle or damage could result. Especially if done on a continuous basis.

Relay clicks, gas blows, rollers dont turn

If you use it regularly, the liner should be replaced about every 6 months. Make sure you get a wiper for the wire. It goes inside the machine, on the wire, just before the feed rollers. It keeps the dust from clogging the liner.
