Question about Kenmore 50522 / 50524 Side by Side Refrigerator
We woke up today to the smell of burning wires/plastic and I thought for sure something was on fire. The smell was coming from the refrig so we unplugged it and opened the windows. Had a local repair shop check it out and they said the relay from the compressor was burned up and that the reason was the compressor was bad. They said that the amps from the compressor to the relay should be between 1.3 and 1.7 amps and after 10 minutes it spiked to 4.02 amps. They suggested we call Sears as it was less than 5 years since it was bought new. We almost pulled all our teeth out trying to get Sears to come and check it out but they finally sent a service unit out. Well surprise surprise, they say that the compressor is ok even tho they did say that after a few minutes that they recorded a 2.2 amp spike and wanted to charge me $250.00 for replacing the relay and he didn't have a Sears part with him but he had another brand part that would work yet he suggested that since the local repair shop had hooked up a relay to test it out that the warranty might now be void. The local repair company offered to talk to the Sears repair man about their findings but the Sears man refused and stated that the local company was stupid and didn't know what they were doing. So now what? Do I take the Sears' repairman's advice and only replace the relay and take a chance of burning up the house if it should catch on fire or what. My gut feeling is that Sears hopes that by replacing the relay that it might last the 3 months till the compressor is out of warranty and then they could walk away from it and say, oops, to bad it is out of warranty. Or should I hire another company to check it out and get a third opinion. This is getting costly that I really can't afford. $300 of food out in the trash and we still don't have a solution. I really don't know where to turn. Any suggestions? Thanks!!! saso
As an appliance tech myself, it sounds like the relays have gone bad, the burning smell or sometimes a hmmmm then a click sound can be heard when the relays are out. The appliance place that you took your appliance to should have been able to fix it pretty quick. Questions? Visit my web site at www.GofarAppliance.com (the houston link has more info).. ALSO, all who read this and visit my website ARE more than welcome to CALL me if you have questions. We service appliances mainly in the houston area.

We too are having the problem of smelling burning wires/plastic and unpluded our refrig (model # 10650592000 sise by side) The center panel was so hot near the top I could not touch it. Sears can not send a service man until Tuesday; however, even if they say it is fixable I will be afraid of a fire.

Personally I'd go with the repair company - I had a bad experience with Sears - they did something similar to me and I'm not too impressed with their service standards.

Tips for a great answer:
Your compressor just went bad...
Many times a freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of
a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go
you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out the last two
If your refrigerator is running but warm, then...
Check out these tips that I wrote about that... it is a great place to start trouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do rather then calling a repair person to do a simple thing for you...
