Menu options for Canon E0S 40D have changed

Hi there,

I've had my camera for about a year. Today I plugged in the battery to recharge. When I put the battery back into the camera the menu options changed. On the menu option scroll bar along the top of the screen the only option I can click on now is the green star on the far right called 'My menu settings'. Usually I can choose from all the icons, but now, all of a sudden, this isn't possible! When I click on 'My menu settings' I can choose between the following options: Register, Sort, Delete, Delete all items, Display from My Menu (Enable).

Another strange thing - I've also tried to upload my photos to my PC this morning and, whereas I've managed to do this successfully before, now the PC doesn't recognise the camera...

Can you help? I'm doing a photography course next week and really need a working camera for it!
