Question about Zenith SY2551S TV

1 Answer

No picture Having a video problem building up for several years. Every once in a while the picture color goes reddish, like everyone on the tube looks like they've spent waaayy too much time in the sun and any landscapes look like photos from Mars. I twist the video plug and/or spray contact cleaner on the video RCA jack and everything's fine. However, for the last month it happened several times per night, then all picture disappeared. When I pull and insert the video cable again, the screen gets white horizontal streaks for a split second, then back to no picture. Not sure if replacing the little sandwich board that holds the RCA connectors will do the trick, or if the tube is toast. Speaking of toast, I never smelled any smoke! :-) Thank you!

Re: no picture

Gets white horizontal streaks for a split second, then back to no picture. i think sound will be alright. while horizontal streaks are called retace lines & is due to video section failure. please call skilled tech to fix it it is not a major problem & can be rectified. at your place without replacing much parts. your tube is ok. good luck

After turning the tv on the colors are reddish and slow to conform to the normal color tones. i have a 36" toshiba flat screen tv

My first concern would be that, the picture tube is going bad. The problem you describe, tell me one of the color guns is shorting. In this case I would think the green gun is shorting. There are three color guns in the neck of the picture tube. They are red, green, and blue. Most of the time the green will short as it is powered heavily in most TVs. The next thing to check, is the small board connected to the picture tube. Look for any and all bad grounds on this CRT board. This is another big problem in all Tube type TVs. On this small board there will be three color output transistors, and resistors. These will many times run very hot and will create bad grounds over time. Check and resolder as necessary. If the CRT board does not fix your problem, replace the TV. Picture tubes are very expensive and will not be feasible for replacement. Search for a new TV. Model ds31590 screen has a reddish purple tint whether it s on tv or video i have already tried to change all picture settings and set back to factory settings still has same problem, here is an example...

Chances are real good that your picture is showing its age. There are three color beams in the neck of the picture tube. When these electrodes are operating correctly the will produce an arc, that will produce the proper voltage for color correction. Much like the spark plugs in your car. When you have a fouled spark plug, you replace it. In the case of a TV, replacing the tube is the best way to correct the picture you are looking for. It would be to costly to do this of course. Another option is to rejuvenate the picture tube. Once again, rejuvenating the picture is last resort. Customers must be warned that rejuvenating may work or even in some cases destroy the picture tube. I want to remind you as well, the symptoms you describe will over work the main board as well. This TV is not feasible for repair. Thanks for asking and show a few hands of support!

I have a sony wega and the picyure is clear but has a green tint what could that be

There are several possibilities in that area. The Picture Tube (CRT) is driven by three different video signals. One presents the Red, one the Blue and one Green. All other colors are derived from a mixture of those three colors. The greenish tint could be a sign that the green gun is being over driven or the Red and the Blue are less than adequate to create a normal picture. Sorry to say this but the most common problem that causes that symptom is the emission in the "gun" assembly inside the picture tube is declining with age and hours of operation. Sony Picture tubes are typically good for around 40,000 hours of use. I don't recommend replacing the picture tube. If the set is more than 5 years old I would suggest that you start looking for a new set.

I know this is bad news but I am just telling what I know the most likely scenario that I have seen in 35 years of TV service.

Sony trinitron xbr screen periodically goes black. The audio stays on but the video cuts out.

Sony sets have several protective circuits that blank the screen if something happens that might damage the picture tube. One of the more common causes is trouble in the vertical output circuit. Given the age of your TV (the XBR models have been around a while), this might also be a symptom of a picture tube starting to fail. Most of these sets have circuitry (called AKB) that adjusts the color drive signals to the picture tube to keep them balanced. If one of the colors is enough out of range the screen will blank. It might be the tube itself, or failure of some part in that AKB circuit. The set might also have defective parts in the input switching or video processing stages.

Unfortunately, I can't suggest any place you might look if you want to try repairing this on your own. This kind of trouble usually needs to be diagnosed and repaired by a professional TV technician who has the service information to track it down.

Hope this has been helpful. Thanks for using Fixya!

25 inch sanyo tv

If the horizontal lines going through the picture are fine white lines, then I would suspect the picture tube as having a heater to cathode short or some other problem. Since some sets have had a 3 year warranty on the picture tube, you may be lucky unless the labor to replace the tube is more than the set is worth. Sanyo is usually not a good name in consumer electronics anymore, so if you're looking for a replacement I would look elsewhere.

There are 3 components that control color, and it sounds like one of those are bad.
You will have to get it repaired.
I would talk to your local repair shop, and see what their estimate is, before deciding on repair or replacement.

It is very common to have the convergance circuit on these sets go out and cause display distortions. Are the colors separated or is just the picture slanted?
