Old Frigidaire Upright Freezer

I was given an old Frigidaire upright freezer that was in working order. After getting it home it was recommended that I let it sit for a couple of days prior to plugging in. Anyway before I could plug it in my stupid dog pulled the cord out of the door tearing a wire off. What does this cord to the door do and would it be safe to plug in?
