ADJUSTMENT

Excessive belt tension will cause damage to the alternator and water pump pulley bearings, while, on the other hand, loose belt tension will produce slip and premature wear on the belt. Therefore, be sure to adjust the belt tension to the proper level.
To adjust the tension on a drive belt, loosen the adjusting bolt or fixing bolt locknut on the alternator, alternator bracket or tension pulley. Then move the alternator or turn the adjusting bolt to adjust belt tension. Once the desired value is reached, secure the bolt or locknut and recheck tension.

4cyl 2000 honda accord engine stalls while idling, recently died and will only start for short periods... possible problems/solutions?

check for spark and fuel after it dies.

If there is spark but no fuel, then the fuel pump may be bad or a clogged fuel filter.

If there is fuel but not spark, then the ignition control module or the ignition coil could be bad.

Also, check that the timing belt is timing the engine correctly.

I need a diagram to see were my tension-er is

I don't have the figure for your car, but the below figure shows how to remove the A/C belt.
the other belts should have a simple slot in the bracket for adjusting. If you have more questions, let us know.

6f92dc6.jpg
3.0L SOHC Diamante
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Loosen the lockbolt on the face of the A/C tensioner pulley.
  3. Turn the adjusting bolt of the A/C tensioner pulley to loosen the tension of the A/C belt.
  4. Remove the A/C compressor belt.
  5. Loosen the locknut on the face of the power steering/alternator tensioner pulley.
  6. Turn the adjusting bolt of the tensioner pulley to loosen the tension of the belt.
  7. Remove the power steering/alternator belt.
To install:
  1. Install the power steering/alternator belt first and then the A/C compressor drive belt.
  2. Adjust the belts to the proper tension by turning the adjusting bolts and tighten pulley fixing nut/bolt.
  3. Tighten the mounting nut of the power steering/alternator tensioner pulley to 36 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).

NOTE The manufacturer does not provide a torque specification for the bolt that secures A/C tensioner pulley.
  1. Connect the negative battery cable.

How to change alternator belt

914d651.gif
alternator and air conditioning compressor
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Loosen the idler pulley bolt.

The replacement of the inner belt on multi-belted engines may require the removal of the outer belts.
To replace a drive belt, loosen the adjusting and mounting bolts of the component which the belt is driving. Move the component inward to relieve the tension on the drive belt.
Slip the belt off the component pulley and match the new belt with the old belt for length and width. The old belt will be slightly longer. After a new belt is installed correctly, adjust the tension.
  1. Turn the adjustment bolt at the top of the idler pulley bracket. Clockwise rotation will tighten the belt; counterclockwise will loosen it.
  2. Keep the idler pulley bolt snug (but not tight) while adjusting belt tension. The adjustment bolt should turn with moderate force.

After adjustment is satisfactory, tighten the idler pulley bolt, and then tighten the adjustment bolt.

Reconnect the negative battery cable.

When replacing more than 1 belt, it is a good idea to make note or mark what belt goes around what pulley; this will make installation easier if you mix up the belts.

I have to replace the alternator but don't know how to loosen the belt tension

Removal & Installation When replacing a serpentine belt, insert a 1/2in. breaker bar into the slot provided on the self-adjusting belt tensioner and pry up enough to slip the belt out from under the pulley. During installation, DO NOT allow the tensioner to "snap" back. Be sure to release the tensioner pressure slowly onto the belt.
  1. If you are working near a battery, disconnect the negative battery cable. This is also advisable in order to prevent personal injury should someone try to start the engine while your hands are near the radiator fan or on a drive belt.
  2. Loosen the mounting and adjusting bolts on the component whose belt is going to be removed.
  3. Pivot the component inward toward the engine and slip the belt off the component's pulley.
  4. Remove the belt from the crankshaft pulley, then remove the belt from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Position the belt to the engine and over the pulleys.
  2. Properly adjust the belt by pivoting the component outward until the proper tension is achieved, then tighten the mounting and adjusting bolts.
  3. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
