Same problem here. Occasionally, I get random segments lit up on the display, but basically it won't turn on and none of the controls work. Most of the time it is dead with no display. Do you think it is the same component that needs to be replaced? What specific NPN transistor # do I need to replace it?

I could not find an R402. there is an R404, but there is no transistor underneath it. My radio is an AWR1-1W.

It's probably not related, but the backup battery never worked from day one.

No, R402 is a resistor on mine. So is R404. My Bose Wave is a series I or II. The few transistors it has are D and Q numbers.

  • Poko Jan 04, 2008

I see now....I misread the solution earlier. There is an SMD transistor "under" R402 on the backside -- it's Q401.

The display had most if not all segments lit up all the time, but the radio would not turn on. Now, nothing works. Ive spoken to Bose with no help offered. I am an engineer and would like a schematic???

Check R406 for open. It could also cause by faulty Q401, 5V supply to the display. Cold solder or fractured joints between display and main PCB.
Good Luck.

The problem is a shorted NPN surface mount transistor on solderside of the PCB. It is located underneath of R402.

This transistor is used to switch power to the unit.

SOURCE: Bose wave radio won't turn on

Unfortunately Bose will not release their schematics or parts lists, effectively giving them a monpoly on repair of these units. Their web site,, offers to repair most Wave radios for $100 or to provide a $200 allowance towards purchase of a new Wave. Before you spend the big bucks on theis trouble-prone product though, you might want to check out the new HD radios -- better sound and MUCH lower prices than Bose.

Bose radio will not turn on

You didn't mention which model of the Wave Radio you have but since you have a 9V battery it narrows it down to a couple of models. You might want to check the Q4 transistor (2SC3792) for a short on the two outide pins. With the power disconnected, measure with a multimeter the resistance between the two outside pins of the Q4 transistor. If you measure anything between 0-3 ohms it is shorted. Replace this part with a similar part or you could replace it with the new Bose recommended part - 2SD438F-MP-E but it is very hard to obtain. I have used an 2SC2655 instead and had no problems so far with the radio. This radio also came in totally dead with no display nor the radio working.

The sub is bad.the power supply inside the sub is your problem. If your unit comes on it could also be a defective dsp pcb in the sub.everything in the sub runs the head unit.If you send to bose they have a 175. flat rate.

The RSX BOSE radio stopped working.

If you disconnect the bose radio, it loses it's programing.. Needs to be taken to a GM dealer and vin coded. as for the volume knob, it's digital.. if it's not working it wont be a connection issue, it's likely a flaw on the board. The best place to get that fixed is United radio in NY. 1-800-448-0944

Turn on radio - the word SAFE will appear in the display. Press th P.SCAN and RBDS buttons simultaneously and hold them down until "1000" lights up in the display.Release buttons.Do not, under no circumtances, continue holding them down or press them once again. This will cause the radio to consider the number 1000 to be the input code.Use station buttons 1,2,3,and 4 to enter the code number on your Radio Card. Use the button 1 to enter the first number 2 for the second number 3 for the third number and 4 for the last number.Once you have entered the code and it shows on the display, press the P.SCAN and RBDS buttons down again simultaneously and hold them down until the word SAFE appears in the display.Release buttons. Soon afterwards a frequency will be displayed.

I have a problem with time display on my Bose CD/Clock Radio.

I found the answer on the Bose website in the manual for the radio. While the radio is on, hold down Alarm Setup and preset 1 at the same time. That will set it so the clock displays. If you do the same thing but hold down preset button 2, that will display the radio info all the time.
