You have a defective thermostat that gets stuck in the off cycle. A replacement would be my advice. Very easy to change out. Just two wires. Hope this helps.

I wonder if the defrost timer needs to be replaced

Posted on Oct 19, 2013

Testimonial: "Thank Mikadot for checking :). I did not check it. If it is bad, that mean it keeping defrost and cannot turn back to energy for the compressor, right? I leave the fridge off for one day and see it's cool inside (the ice still there). That mean the heating element is not working all the time. If the defrost timer bad, it will be very hot inside, right? Or it will be off when all the frost is melt. Then the timer stay in the defrost cycle while the heating element is turn off by the temperature switch? Please help me to check. Thank you"

The timer is the mechanical one, so if we turn off and turn back on the thermostat, it should stay the last position, right?

SOURCE: My whirlpool refrigerator trips the main power

Pankaj, Do you have a ohm meter? Sounds like you have something shorting back. First take the meter to the cord. On the end of the cord, you should show no continuity from each male prong to the ground prong on the cord itself. If you show continuity, you have something shorting back. Then I would start with the compressor, Unplug the wires going to the overload and relay, make sure the units unpluged and meter the cord again. If it's ok, then the problem is in the overload and relay. Start there and let me know, if it still showing a short, then we will have to go to the controls, heater, and repeat the process until you find the culprit. Catriver.

SOURCE: refrigerator keeps running

I have the same problem. I called a service rep for G.E. and he said that there are 3 thermodisc
sensors behind the white evaporator cover. He gave me a price to repair that was completly out
of range for the problem. I paid him for his service call and sent him on his way. I then decided to
to order the parts from a factory online parts center at less then half the cost of my estimate not
to mention that when I was ordering the part the Factory emailed me a complete parts breakdown showing the Thermodisc and that my unit only has 1 thermodisc not three installed from the factory.
I ordered 2 one for a backup just in case. I deiced the buildup and installed the disc after 24 hours the refrigerator was working normal for about 4-months. Once again the refrigerator iced up and stopped cooling so I called the factory tech support and they told that it is normal to have some ice on the cover of the evaporator and the thermodisc is at that point supposed to open the cooling circuit to let the unit go into defrost mode and then close again. The Tech said that I had a bad
Thermodisc again so I put the spare one that I ordered in and it also worked for about 3 months
now I have the same problem ????????

SOURCE: ROPER RS22AQXMQ SIDE BY SIDE REFRIGERATOR PROBLEM

I had the same problem with a top freezer. I found that the thermostat was bad by tapping on the it at the setting knob. The defrost timer was replaced first which did not help (repairman put in a timer for a Frigadair which will not work in a Roper). If one is used for a frigadair as soon as it cycles it will not work again until it is unplugged and allowed to reset. I replaced both the thermostat and the right defrost timer. It has worked great for over 2 months.

Hope this helps.

I have elite kenmore ref/freezer model#106.54616300 I connect 220Volts instead of 110 call Sears I told what I did he told me the control panel is damaged there is no control panel what canI do?

Your refrigerator has very simple and basic controls.
First there is no control board. It has a thermostat that controls the compressor and besides the defrost timer and the light switch that is pretty much it. Since troubleshooting your refrigerator will need the use of a multimeter to accurately determine the problem it will be difficult to find what went wrong. But here are two things you can try. Turn the thermostat on and off and see if it restarts. Second, find the defrost timer and on the face of it is a dial just big enough for a screwdriver, try turning that, It should click while turning. The possible parts that are burnt are the defrost timer, thermostat, start capacitor or and start relay, defrost termination thermostat and last the compressor. If you know how to use a multimeter and have one, write back and I will walk you through the process.

Freezer works but fridge does not

Lets see if the defrost timer being turned clockwise slowly will force defrost and cause things to get colder. On page 5 of the (click HERE=>ET4WSKXKQ02 Parts Manual ) you will see location 4? That is the 2188371 Defrost Timer
a17e87fd-de4a-4c2d-8f91-387a705d8efc.jpg

inside the fresh food com[partment at the top and behind the control panel will be the 2188371 Defrost Timer If forcing defrost solves the cooling problem then just replace the 2188371 Defrost Timer and if not we will need to check the 2176942 Defrost Heater Assembly and the 2192096 Defrost Thermostat Don't buy ba defrost thermostat until we discuss a different way of getting one to work should you need one (last resort because of cost) My focus is defrost timer and defrost heater at this point you will not need all the wires on the defrost thermostat should you need one just splice a simple defrost thermostat into the wiring harness. Below is a short movie on testing the defrost heater or click HERE Talk with me and we will get this refrigerator working, Sea Breeze

Frost is building on the back part of freezer. Whirlpool refrigerator model ER2CHMXPL02 and has not cycled on/off for over 24 hours.

The reason your refrigerator will not cycle off is because it cannot satisfy the thermostat because ice is blocking air flow across evaporator inside the back wall of your freezer. I want you to look for a small hole inside the control panel where you can place a flathead screwdriver and slowly turn the timer clockwise until compressor and fans stop. If there is no hole there you will need to lower the control panel inside the fresh food compartment. Here is your replacement defrost timer should it turn out to not be good=> 2314156 Defrost Timer
11_21_2012_8_56_08_am.jpg

Once the compressor and fans stop I want you to wait up to 30 minutes to see if the compressor and fans restart. If they do not restart on their own simply turn clockwise again until they do. Doing this will test the timer and cause the freezer to go into defrost. If defrost does not work this way and ice buildup remains on the rear wall of freezer we will need to remove the rear panel in freezer and manually defrost the evaporator with a hair drier. This way we will be able to inspect the=> W10140847 Defrost Heater Assembly

Also found here=> W10140847 Defrost Heater Assembly
and defrost thermostat=> 2321800 Defrost Thermostat I will be here should you have questions, Thanks Sea Breeze

My whirlpool ed5fgexss00 wont get cold

Look at rear wall inside the back of the freezer and see if a frost line is building on rear wall. I have a feeling your freezer is not defrosting properly and not sure exactly what number you model has but checking the defrost timer Click Here=> ED5FTGXKQ00 Controls is where I would begin. We will need to run a couple test to make sure your=> 2323198 Heating Element and Defrost Thermostat=> 2321799 Defrost Thermostat are working properly.Testing heating element is also shown on same page above.Try turning the defrost timer clockwise slowly until refrigerator compressor stops running. This will place the freezer in manual defrost. Then tell me if once you do this if freezer begins defrost. If yes then the defrost timer=> 482493 Defrost Timer is at fault. If stays in defrost simply turn again until compressor restarts again. After doing this I will want you to watch this how to replace defrost heater=> Here I know this may be a little confusing but defrosting manually will help you see which parts may be needed. I will be here to answer any questions you may have, Thanks, Sea Breeze

This refrigerator has a basic wiring diagram showing power going through the defrost timer, compressor and compressor start components. Because the model number could be very close to the ET8WTKXK your model may have either a ADC, adaptive defrost control or typical 482493 Defrost Timer

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp

..
If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Fridge less and less cold. both sides. now totally not cold. defrost timer?new fridge

The parts manual on that refrigerator show a defrost timer inside the fresh food compartment behind the control panel. Need you to turn the timer clockwise with a flathead screwdriver slowly until the compressor stops. Leave it alone for 30 minutes and if it does not turn itself back on then we need to replace the timer. If not we need to unplug the refrigerator and remove the back panel inside the freezer. We will need to test the defrost heater and inspect the defrost thermostat. Let me know when you are ready. The part number for the timer is 68233-3
