Question about Frigidaire Refrigerators

1 Answer

Compressor kicks on intermittently, I thought it was short cycling so I replaced the start relay. this did not help. fridge sits at 60 and the freezer is at 37. The compressor will kick on for a short time and the temps will go down but only for about 10 minutes or so. All the fans seem to be working. Not sure where to go from here.

Feel the top of the compressor is it hot? Usually when a compressor will start and stop this is called short cycling and it is caused by a defective start relay, overload and capacitor. Sometimes it it cause by a defective fan which when this happens all parts including a new fan must be replaced

Neither the freezer or fridge get cold. In fact, both compartments are warmer the room temp. The light comedy on and you can hear it run but you can hear a click like the compressor is trying to kick on. ...

the clicking is the compressor overload tripping. you can try a relay kit part number RCO410 available at any appliance parts supplier. this replaces the relay, overload and start capacitor. you might want to check continuity on the compressor terminals first and check for a short to ground. If shorted or open then the compressor is bad.

Replacing a relay switch on a Kenmore Side by Side

The start run relay kicks the compressor on. If your compressor is running this is not your problem.
There are a number of things that can cause a fridge not to cool. A bad defrost system.. Check to see if you have ice build up in the freezer, or a lot of frost. Also a bad compressor. The relay switch sits on the compressor at the back of the fridge. If you put a new relay on and it won't start the compressor you have a bad compressor. Most compressors are warrantied through the manufacturer for at least 5 years. So if it's that call the manufacturer for replacement.

After moving frigde and freezer quit.

Your compressor start relay has become loose or possibly defective.
Push it back on for a good connection.
Watch it when you plug the fridge in.
If it sparks replace it.

Problem has returned to Maytag fridge

I note this is a very old post. The compressor is not starting and what you were hearing was the PTC relay energizing followed by the KilXon thermal overload kicking off the compressor start sequence. What happens is that the PTC relays sometimes get a heated contact. Due to the weakened state of the contact it can cause a buzz. Even with a goo PTC relay you would hear the compressor buzz if it was not starting. In that case the run capacitor may have failed or the compresor rotor is internally locked at which point the start cycle will repeat every 3 to 4 minutes as the thermal overload cycles and the compressor will not start.

Compressor short cycling

If the compressor is run off of a relay then you could install a delay timer to prevent short cycling.
