First job is to check all the obvious things: do i have enough fuel, did i get bad fuel at the last fill-up, is the air filter clogged or soaking wet for whatever reason, or are the battery terminals or engine earth/ground cables corroded or loose.. If nothing obvious then invest in someone to read and interpret the ecu codes for you. most mechanics will do this free if you are an existing client, or else allow a one hour labour charge to find the problem code.

Had this sign limited performance pop up on my dashboard of my 2007 Saab 9-3 1.9tdi had some one look at it they plugged it in and come up with cruise control switch ? and im getting abit of turbolag

I can't see it myself even though I have no experience of the car model.

Lots of the vehicle content is Vauxhall/Opel/GM (I think) suitably modified by Saab.
It doesn't sound logical that a dodgy cruise control switch would cause reduced performance. A reduced performance condition is usually caused by something that affects tailpipe emissions or something affecting engine integrity or reliability.

I heard on the grapevine some Vauxhall models have reduced performance simply because they are overdue for some maintenance and once the service indicator has been reset they are fine again. I don't know how true this is. I know of one Vauxhall that flags up an overboost fault and cuts performance when there is an egr valve fault. The true cause could not be discovered by a generic obd scanner and it was only when it was plugged into something with some very expensive dedicated software that it became obvious.

There is no telling what the Saab boffins have done to the management programmes. There are vehicles around that go into reduced performance if the oil level or pressure is low and maybe they thought that might be a good idea.

I suggest you continue your Saab research at the local Saab dealer or on one of the specialised forums, but certainly I suggest you get the code re-read by a dedicated diagnostic machine.

Can transmission overheat cause reduced engine power

the ECM records problems with the engine and transmission and if those problems go outside set parameters then the ECM puts the car into reduced performance mode (limp mode)
Yes --if the transmission is over heating then the limp mode cuts in to protect the transmission from damage.

Hi, I have just replaced the cylinder head on my pajero 2.8 diesel. It started first time and ran for about 4/5 mins then cut out. It is attempting to fire but won't.....any ideas would be grate

Keep pumping the hand bleed pump on top of the fuel filter to remove all the air. when started and still a bit lumpy keep pumping and it should clear itself

My 2004 would cut off at idle, but start again after a min or so. But time it ran and cut off after a mile. Now it won't start at all. Won't turn over. It will move somewhat when I turned it by

The crank sensor tells the computer when number one cylinder is at top dead center to find the timing for the spark plugs.
If the engine will not crank with the starter, the starter, key switch, battery or cables could be faulty.
Some of these items could also cause it not to start.
If the engine is stuck you won't be able to turn it at all.

1991 corolla just won'tr hold a steady speed it cuts out backfires accelerate and its fine let off to maintain a steady speed and it won't

The poor performance of the car makes these faults to come up and undermine the working of the engine. So to start off we need to check from the fuel tank. Check if the fuel contains impurities and specially water. If so this can come up with the pumping when the tank gets empty and produce misfiring, splutter and jerks. So a check on the fuel filter will confirm this as it will be seen, if so remove and clean tank and change the filter. We then come to the fuel pump/carburetor as the fuel mixing and pressure is determined in this section. You need to have the pump calibrated if the pressure at the injector is low.

Then we must check with the electrics. The spark intensity is most important .Remove all plugs to check gap and condition of plugs. The black plug indication will confirm that the performance is bad whereas a fully fired plug without deposits must be the ideal view. Check the HT coil and the HT wires, if the intensity is bad this must be swapped and checked to confirm. DO NOT CHANGE any part without a confirmation by trying with a replacement from another vehicle or friend. Finally the LT trigger to the coils must be checked be it from the platinum points or an electronic ignition unit. The voltage of the trigger must be high to give the best HT output.

Now use a strobe to check the Timing on the engine. In your case the backfiring is a result of wrong timing or fault in the exhaust/valve . Adjust if needed to see the TOP DEAD CENTER-TDC- mark. If there is valve noise make sure that the tappets are set properly so that the valves seat firmly for the best compression. Also check compression of engine if there is imbalance on the engine or reduced power.
