How to test a motrcycle twin ignition coil

To test a twin ignition coil on a motorcycle you will need a pocket multimeter.
With the meter set to kilo-ohms(1000 ohms) scale,place one test lead into one spark plug cap & the other test lead into the other plug cap.(this is called the ignition coil secondary resistance) The reading should be around 20-40kilo ohms.
If a high reading exists check again with spark plug caps removed(they un screw from the lead) then check caps seperate. Caps typically read 5 to 10 kilo-ohms.

A faulty plug cap is not as un-common as you might think.

To test ignition coil primary resistance set the meter to ohms(lowest scale) Place one meter test lead to the small wire going into the coil & the other test lead onto the coils body(where its metal) The reading should be only 2 to 5 ohms.

Rectifier problem

If you suspect that you have a recifier problem ,Borrow or purchase a voltage meter ,Start your bike and put the voltage meter on the positive & negative terminal on the direct current rating ,Rev the bike up slowly to 1000 revs you should be if the regulator is ok be seeing a reading of 13.4 max .Increase the revs to 3000. but only for a few seconds the voltage should stay the same ,Any increase highter that 13.4 then you have a regulator problem .and run the risk of blown fuses or bulbs ,or burnt or melting wiring .One important thing to remember is that your battery must be in good condition..Poor or bad batteries may give a false reading .

The voltage meter on a Moto Guzzi LeMans CSX 1000 is showing it is overcharging. Even when I start the bike or put on the headlight, there is no change to the reading on the voltmeter.

the voltage read with a voltage meter on a healthy battery should read about 13-14 volts.15 and over is overcharging, 12 and under the battery is undercharged. you read no drop while bike was running, this is good, alternator is good.

Megger testing of wire insulation. what represents a good reading and what is a bad reading. Using a AMB45 (Amprobe) Is an "OL" good or bad?

OL is a good reading, it represents a reading of greater than 400Mohm, with any insulation testing the greater the value the better.
