I'm not sure if you are saying that your laptop does not have an Insert button or if your insert button isn't working.
The question here is what version of Word are you using?
In Word 2007 they disabled use of the Insert / INS button. If you wish to turn overtype mode on you now need to do the following -

  1. Click the Microsoft Office Button default.aspx?assetid=za100771021033, and then click Word Options.
  2. Click Advanced.
  3. Under Editing options, select or clear the Use overtype mode check box.
You can turn the use of the Insert button back on here.

SOURCE: When typing, cursor jumps to another line or paragraph

try updating the mousepad drivers, maybe they are not good. there may be new ones on the dell site that would work better with your machine. it sounds just like the issue you get with some sony machines where the drivers are no good as standard.

Using a PC you can highlight the text and press control C.
Or you can right click after selecting the text and select Copy from the menu.

Then Paste the text back into the box, by using Control V or right click the mouse and choose Paste.

When typing an email message on my laptop computer, sometimes a paragraph in the message I am typing will disappear or delete, and I am not hitting the delete key, what could be causing this problem

on my laptop it does the same thing or mixes up the whole paragraph, has to do with bumping the buttons or pads of the mouse with your wrists, I hate using my laptop because of this. just gotta watch closly or look in mouse settings and adjust it's sensitivity if possible. Good Luck

I have an ASUS P1001 Netbook, OS XP. When I am typing text, the cursor will sometimes jumps to a previous line, where my typing continues in the middle of a paragraph, or worse, when I am typing text,...

Think you might have (and it's very easy to do when you're typing) touched the touchpad as you're typing- which was probably why the cursor got repositioned. Without knowing the features on your ASUS, I'd look for Windows (assuming it's the OS) Control Panel and Mouse Controls - there usually is something that can be adjusted as to what qualifies as a tap (say, a really light tap versus a hard tap) and fiddle with it. You should be able to get it to work to your liking.

What is the Insert Pause and Delete Break key for

These keys used to be very useful in console mode (without the GUI). They are still useful in graphical systems.
PrtSc allows you to copy the graphical content of a screen as an image and paste it in document editing program. It copies the whole screen (with windows overlapping as if it were a collage)
Used in conjunction with the SHIFT key it copies the top window (the active window).

The Pause Break key halts the scrolling of a text on the screen in Console Mode. Imagine you are in a Dos system or Linux console and you type Print with the name of a text file. It will start scrolling rapidly across the screen. Pressing the pause Break key allows you to STOP/HALT the scrolling so that you can read what is being shown.

If you are running a long program in console mode (the old way) the program will only print messages to the console when asked to. If a calculation takes to long and you have no idea what it is doing you can push the Break key and the system halt the execution of the program (suspend) until you issue the termination command or the resume command.

The DEL key issue a delete command to erase the highlighted character or word or whole paragraph in text editing mode. If you press CTRL ALT DEL a Windows based system will raise the task manager to allow you to either turn computer OFF, kill a task or what have you. Just try it. On old console based windows (3.2, 98, Me, 2000) it will reboot the system.

The Insert or INS key allows you to toggle between Insert or Overwrite in text editing software.

As to the Sys Req key function, that is not clear, it depends on the hardware you are using. Basically it sends a low-level message to the operating system to force it to interrupt what it was doing to return control to the console operator. Most people will nowadays safely ignore it. Most systems just do that:they ignore it.

Text in excel textbox turns to gibberish

It may be a font issue... did you change the font of the typed-in text to a non-True Type face? For every typeface there are two fonts: a screen font to display on your monitor and a printer font for printing,

If somehow there is confusion or corruption in the Excel file contents about exactly which font is specified at a given point in the text box (e.g.if you type like I do with lots of backspaces, which are actually special codes that can cause such corruption), then the misfire between screen and print fonts can cause the text data to be corrupt. It seems to be an operating system issue (did you make a lot of changes to fonts on your system?) or something wrong with your personal installation of Office 2003 in any case, because Excel 2003 is a very stable release. To fix this I would try examining the Windows\Fonts folder using a third-party tool or comparing its contents to a known-good Windows installation (or simply copy and paste your typed paragraphs into Notepad and re-paste it into a new text box in a New Document (starting fresh with a new Excel worksheet could solve it all by itself).

Screen load shifts, text deleted

Sound like it, some touch pad drivers have a setting to turn it off while your typing, look through its settings and see what you can find.
