Toshiba laptop wont start...going through boot menu now...it's 6 percent complete. Several files are unreadable. What could be the problem other than a virus?

If the laptop does not boot, it is because files go corrupted on the disk. At boot time viruses if exist are not running yet. Could be that the hard disk is at the end of its life, If the laptop is older then 3 years.
You can try re-install/recover the operating system.

What version or Windows are you running? Try booting with your Windows disc and select repair. Get to a DOS prompt and overwrite the file with the same name file from the CD. The file may also be located in whatever drive letter the system assigns your repair CD. (Usually X I think).

Missing or corrupt file on booting up,go to setup to do a repair. F2 for 'setup' F12 for 'boot device selection menu'. But F2 and F12 do nothing, is there other alternate keys to operate.

depending on the model, sometimes F11 is the OS recovery key for Toshibas, it's possible your hard drive could be going bad. if the laptop is under warranty I recommend contacting Toshiba. If out of warranty it's best to take the laptop to a local computer shop.

Reinstall the operating system from the setup disk. Unfortunately, you may need to reformat it and loose your data. It's probably a corrupted hard drive.

My toshiba L500 wont boot up when i turn it on it starts to load files then stops and tries to repair the problem but it does not

Hi,
There are so many reasons boot up; i.e if system files corrupted by virus or hard disk index tables corruption or hdd partions corruption.

So as a initial trouble shooting try to do following things to resolve problem.

Option 1:

1. Power ON your computer and Press F8 key to have Windows boot menu option

2. Select "Safe Mode with Command Prompt" and Press Enter
3. When command prompt loaded then type follwing command and press enter

chkdsk /r c:

(If this command is not working in "safe mode with command prompt" then start computer with Bootable CD and Press "R" key when first time asked. It will open recovery console and type this "chkdsk /r "command again to repair disk.)

This command will scan your hdd and repair disk errors.

Option 2 :

To repair your windows without losing your data.
Start Computer with bootable CD
Press R when it is asked to press.
It will repair windows.
Note : Please read Status Bar and screen messages /nstructions carfully (while Booting computer thru Bootable CD)

Aer laptop wont start up due to absent or corrupt file.

scan for viruses, there could be some malicious software trying to delete important files needed for the operating system to boot up properly. You better hurry because next time it might not start at all, u ever hear of a Boot sector virus?

Startup problem

From: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000646.htm If the ntoskrnl.exe file is corrupt or missing this can also generate the error. To restore this file follow the below steps. 1. Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD. Note: If you have a recovery CD or a restore CD and not a Microsoft Windows XP CD it is likely the below steps will not resolve your issue. 2. Reboot the computer, as the computer is starting you should see a message to press any key to boot from the CD. When you see this message press any key. 3. In the Microsoft Windows XP setup menu press the R key to enter the recovery console. 4. Select the operating system you wish to fix, and then enter the administrator password. 5. Type expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32 6. You will then be prompted if you wish to overwrite the file type Y and press enter to overwrite the file. 7. Type exit to reboot the computer. If you only have a restore CD, this probably won't work. You should just start the restore all over again, if this is the case.
