Question about John Deere Garden
No timing chain in almost any mass produced lawn mower engine, but thanks for playing. Some have timing belts, but not many. A more common problem is a bent exhaust pushrod. Try putting your hand infront of the muffler when starting, after taking the coil lead off of the plug, and see if air comes out at your hand. If it turns over, backfires, and no pressure is coming out the exhaust, that means the exhaust valve isn't opening and the pressure or explosion created can only exit through the intake valve an out the carb and air filter. Take off the silver "OHV" cover and see if the pushrod for the exhaust valve is bent or broken.

The timing chain has slipped a few link and is out of sync. This happens with a loose chain. Replace chain and re- align with the timing marks
