Grab a flashlight. When your screen goes black, shine the light on it. If you can see a faint image (press the Windows key and see if you the start menu pops up) then your inverter is going out. They are not expensive but depending on how time consuming it is to replace it, it might be easier and cheaper to just get a new monitor.

SOURCE: my monitor suddenly become black

If your PC is still running there could be two problems. One is the monitor, check to see if all the cables are plugged in well. Power cable from the wall and data cable coming from the back of the computer, if you have another PC close by test the monitor on that computer if not working on the other PC also, its the monitor=bad. Otherwise you can assume it was your video card though that is rare because of excessive video usage such as games and videos all at once. If you fail to solve this problem the monitor may have expired, a virus may have infested, the video card may have shorted out considering all the other possabilities are nulled.

My son has managed to turn the screen on a Philips computer monitor so dark we can't see anything and I don't know how to turn up Model number 227E4LHAB/00

Look on the monitor front panel, there will be a tiny picture of what looks like a Sun and then a forward slash and an Arrow pointing up, that is the screen brightness control.

The screen in my Philips 190SW8FS/00 monitor, suddenly becomes black... I connected it in a laptop, it does the same thing after a while. Do you know what might be the problem that causes this?

Its not a usual thing to happen, Just try to restart your laptop and check it if you get anything on the screen. It might be a operating system issue (in that case you will see the main screen of your laptop while starting like brand name ) also it might be a screen issue (in that case you can try to connect this laptop to any external monitor and check it) or it might be a hardware issue (normally caused by RAM)

Power light is green but screen is black

Do you get anything at all on the screen--like white writing at startup?
Even if your video drivers have become corrupt, they are not used until Windows actually starts.
It very well could be the flourescent backlight has gone bad. Can you adjust the brightness/contrast at all to see anything?
If those controls do nothing for you, then you're looking to get a new monitor.
Your monitor does have a sort of power supply for the backlight and that could be bad, but if you're not into taking it apart, then you are far better off buying a new monitor.

Check that the pc to monitor vga lead is not loose at both ends, check your graphics drivers are upto date, although it could well be a monitor fault and replacment required, as don't think they are worth reparing these days
