Aluminium tape, not plastic duct tape.
Corrugated rigid aluminium ducting, don't use the foil stuff, its not suitable.
Clean duct and machine about every 500 cycles, ie if 2 a day then every 250 days. (adjust to actual linting)

STAT out.
Remove the air cleaner and duct assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.4L.

Drain the coolant until the coolant level is below the thermostat. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling (Refer To List 1) .

Remove the crossover exhaust pipe. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Pipe Replacement (Refer To List 2) in Engine Exhaust.

Remove the radiator hose from the thermostat housing.

Remove the thermostat housing bolts and clean any sealer from the bolt threads.

Remove the thermostat housing and gasket.
remove STAT
next is crossover page.

Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Refer To List 1) in Engine Electrical.

Remove the throttle body air inlet duct.

Drain the coolant from the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling (Refer To List 2) in Engine Cooling.

Remove the inlet radiator hose from the engine. Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement (Refer To List 3) in Engine Cooling.

Remove the thermostat bypass pipe. Refer to Thermostat Bypass Pipes Replacement in Engine Cooling.



Remove the exhaust crossover heat shield bolts.

Remove the exhaust crossover heat shield.
  1. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe studs/nuts.
  2. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe.

  1. Disconnect the left engine mount strut from the engine.
  2. Remove the heater hose from the bypass pipe.
  3. Remove the thermostat bypass pipe to throttle body nut.
  4. Use the J 38185 in order to remove the thermostat bypass pipe hose clamps (1,5).
  5. Remove the thermostat bypass pipe to cylinder head nut (3).
  6. Remove the thermostat bypass pipe bolt (4).
  7. Remove the thermostat bypass pipe hose.
  8. Remove the thermostat bypass pipe.

I just seen this post..after i wrote on the other post..Check the two hoses on the DPFE sensor..They connect to a pipe that comes off the exhaust..If you have a broken hose it will set this code..If the hoses are fine take off the hoses and run a small peice of wire to unclogg the the lines on the pipe..After that crank the vehicle and see if you feel any exhaust come out..then reconnect the hoses...If the hose is broke,,replace it with silicone hose,,regular vacuum hose or fuel hose will not hold up

Check this procedure, according with the repair guide for...

2.3L and 2.4L Engines
(see Figure 9)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable
  2. Detach the oxygen sensor connector.
  3. Properly drain the engine coolant into a suitable container. Remove the heater hose from the thermostat housing for more complete coolant drain.
  4. Remove upper exhaust manifold heat shield.
  5. Remove the bolt that attaches the exhaust manifold brace to the manifold.
  6. Remove the lower exhaust manifold heat shield.
  7. Break loose the manifold to exhaust pipe spring loaded bolts using a 13mm box wrench.
  8. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
It is necessary to relieve the spring pressure from 1 bolt prior to removing the second bolt. If the spring pressure is not relieved, it will cause the exhaust pipe to twist and bind up the bolt as it is removed.
  1. Unfasten the two radiator outlet pipe-to-water pump cover bolts.
  2. Remove the manifold to exhaust pipe bolts from the exhaust pipe flange as follows:
    1. Unscrew either bolt clockwise 4 turns.
    2. Remove the other bolt.
    3. Remove the first bolt.
On the 2.4L engines, DO NOT rotate the flex coupling more than 4° or damage may occur.Pull down and back on the exhaust pipe to disengage it from the exhaust manifold bolts.
  1. Remove the radiator outlet pipe from the oil pan and transaxle. If equipped with a manual transaxle, remove the exhaust manifold brace. Leave the lower radiator hose attached and pull down on the outlet pipe to remove it from the water pump. Leave the radiator outlet pipe hang.
  2. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  3. Unfasten the exhaust manifold-to-cylinder head retaining nuts, then remove the exhaust manifold, seals and gaskets.
  4. For the 2.4L engine, remove the front timing chain cover and the chain tensioner. For details, please refer to the procedure located later in this section.
  5. Unfasten the water pump-to-cylinder block bolts. Remove the water pump-to-timing chain housing nuts. Remove the water pump and cover mounting bolts and nuts. Remove the water pump and cover as an assembly, then separate the two pieces.

To install:

  1. Thoroughly clean and dry all mounting surfaces, bolts and bolt holes. Using a new gasket, install the water pump to the cover and tighten the bolts finger-tight.
  2. Lubricate the splines of the water pump with clean grease and install the assembly to the engine using new gaskets. Install the mounting bolts and nuts finger-tight.
  3. Lubricate the radiator outlet pipe O-ring with antifreeze and slid the pipe onto the water pump cover. Install the bolts finger-tight.
  4. With all gaps closed, tighten the bolts, in the following sequence, to the proper values:
    1. Pump assembly-to-chain housing nuts-19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
    2. Pump cover-to-pump assembly-106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
    3. Cover-to-block, bottom bolt first-19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
    4. Radiator outlet pipe assembly-to-pump cover-125 inch lbs. (14 Nm).
  5. Using new gaskets, install the exhaust manifold. Make sure to following the tightening sequence and torque specifications given in the exhaust manifold procedure located in this section.
  6. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  7. Index the exhaust manifold bolts into the exhaust pipe flange.
  8. Connect the exhaust pipe to the manifold. Install the exhaust pipe flange bolts evenly and gradually to avoid binding. Turn the bolts in until fully seated.
  9. Connect the radiator outlet pipe to the transaxle and oil pan. Install the exhaust manifold brace, if removed.
  10. On the 2.4L engine, install the timing chain tensioner and front cover.
  11. Install the lower heat shield.
  12. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  13. Fasten the bolt that attaches the exhaust manifold brace to the manifold.
  14. Tighten the manifold-to-exhaust pipe nuts to specification.
  15. Install the upper heat shield.
  16. Attach the oxygen sensor connector.
  17. Fill the radiator with coolant until it comes out the heater hose outlet at the thermostat housing. Then connect the heater hose. Leave the radiator cap off.
  18. Connect the negative battery cable, then start the engine. Run the vehicle until the thermostat opens, fill the radiator and recovery tank to their proper levels, then turn the engine off.
  19. Once the vehicle has cooled, recheck the coolant level.

Manifold and exhaust parts pipe that connects maifold to cat


Thats a manifold preheater hose in the back part of the engine kinda a "L" shaped pipe?.
Or is it the EGr valve housing located above the exhaust system.
Try "parts train" online they have the parts and good prices,an deliver right away.

My husband and I are trying to get to our thermostat to change in my 2002 rendezvous, but there is a metal pipe in the way that we can't figure out how to remove. just behind the pipe, is a metal plate...

The pipe that you referred to is the exhaust crossover pipe. Below I've included removal and installation instructions.

Also, the procedure for bleeding the coolant system is critical; if you need those instructions please post the question.

REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable.
2. Remove the throttle body air inlet duct.
3. Drain the coolant from the cooling system.
4. Remove the inlet radiator hose from the engine.
5. Remove the thermostat bypass pipe.
6. Remove the exhaust crossover heat shield bolts.
7. Remove the exhaust crossover heat shield.
8. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe studs/nuts.
9. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the exhaust crossover pipe.
2. Install the exhaust crossover pipe studs/nuts.
3. Tighten the exhaust crossover pipe studs/nuts to 18 lb ft.
4. Install the exhaust crossover heat shield.
5. Install the exhaust crossover heat shield bolts.
6. Tighten the exhaust crossover heat shield bolts to 89 lb in.
7. Install the thermostat bypass pipe.
8. Install the inlet radiator hose to the engine.
9. Fill the cooling system with engine coolant.
10. Install the throttle body air inlet duct.
11. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable
  2. Detach the oxygen sensor connector.
  3. Properly drain the engine coolant into a suitable container. Remove the heater hose from the thermostat housing for more complete coolant drain.
  4. Remove upper exhaust manifold heat shield.
  5. Remove the bolt that attaches the exhaust manifold brace to the manifold.
  6. Remove the lower exhaust manifold heat shield.
  7. Break loose the manifold to exhaust pipe spring loaded bolts using a 13mm box wrench.
  8. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
It is necessary to relieve the spring pressure from 1 bolt prior to removing the second bolt. If the spring pressure is not relieved, it will cause the exhaust pipe to twist and bind up the bolt as it is removed.

Cylinderhead torque stc.


Cylinder Head Removal & Installation SOHC To Remove:
  1. Relieve fuel system pressure.
  2. Remove timing belt cover. Camshaft timing marks kia-03-20-7032.gif

  3. Turn crankshaft until timing mark on front housing and the arrow "2" on the camshaft pulley align.
  4. Loosen lock bolt on tensioner.
  5. Pry tensioner away from timing belt and tighten lock bolt to relieve tension on the timing belt.
  6. Remove timing belt from camshaft pulley.
  7. Disconnect battery negative cable.
  8. Remove 3 bolts that secure accelerator cable and air intake hose to cylinder head cover.
  9. Detach accelerator cable and place off to side.
  10. Remove the following;
    • Air hose
    • Air ISC air hose
    • Breather hose
    • Vacuum hose from air intake hose
  11. Disconnect mass air flow sensor electrical connector.
  12. Remove air intake hose.
  13. Remove PCV valve from cylinder head cover.
  14. Remove ISC air hose from idle speed actuator.
  15. Remove air hose from behind intake manifold.
  16. Remove 2 screws from high tension wire protectors.
  17. Detach wire loom from holder at rear of cylinder head cover.
  18. Detach vacuum tube at rear of cylinder head cover.
  19. Remove vacuum pipe. Cylinder Head Cover kia-03-20-7042.gif

  20. Remove 7 cylinder head cover bolts.
  21. Remove cylinder head cover and gasket.
  22. Disconnect 2 ignition coil electrical connectors.
  23. Disconnect 2 fuel injection electrical connectors at rear of cylinder head.
  24. Disconnect the following electrical connectors;
    • Oxygen sensor
    • Throttle position sensor
    • Idle speed actuator
    • Oil pressure switch
    • EGR vacuum solenoid valve at intake manifold
  25. Disconnect heater hose from elbow.
  26. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose and cruise control vacuum hose from surge tank.
  27. Detach wire harness from rear of cylinder head.
  28. Disconnect purge control solenoid vacuum hose from intake manifold.
  29. Disconnect fuel hose from fuel connector assembly.
  30. Remove grounding bracket.
  31. Remove 4 bolts and intake manifold bracket.
  32. Remove starter.
  33. Detach water bypass hose from bypass pipe.
  34. Disconnect water hoses from oil cooler.
  35. Disconnect fuel hose from fuel pipe.
  36. Remove exhaust manifold heat shield.
  37. Remove exhaust flange nuts and front exhaust bracket bolt.
  38. Lower exhaust system. Cylinder head bolt loosening sequence kia-03-20-7050.gif

  39. Loosen cylinder head bolts in 3 steps in proper sequence.
  40. Remove cylinder head bolts and washers.
  41. Remove cylinder head, intake manifold and exhaust manifold as an assembly.
To Install:
  1. Install NEW cylinder head gasket.
  2. Install cylinder head, intake manifold and exhaust manifold as an assembly.
  3. Tighten cylinder head bolts in 3 steps in reverse sequence that was used during removal. Tighten bolts to 62 ft lb (84 Nm).
  4. Install front exhaust bracket bolt. Tighten bolt to 20 ft lb (27 Nm).
  5. Install NEW lower exhaust flange gasket and 3 nuts. Tighten nuts to 24 ft lb (31 Nm).
  6. Install exhaust manifold heat shield. Tighten nuts to 35 in lb (4 Nm).
  7. Connect fuel hose to pipe.
  8. Connect 2 hoses to oil cooler.
  9. Attach water bypass hose to bypass pipe.
  10. Install starter and bolts. Tighten bolts to 34 ft lb (46 Nm).
  11. Install intake manifolds bracket and 4 bolts. Tighten bolts to 32 ft lb (45 Nm).
  12. Install grounding bracket.
  13. Connect fuel hose to fuel connector assembly.
  14. Connect the following electrical connectors;
    • Oxygen sensor
    • Throttle position sensor
    • Idle speed actuator
    • Oil pressure switch
    • EGR vacuum solenoid valve at intake manifold
  15. Connect purge control solenoid vacuum hose to intake manifold.
  16. Attach wire harness from rear of cylinder head.
  17. Connect brake booster vacuum hose and cruise control vacuum hose to surge tank.
  18. Connect heater hose to elbow.
  19. Connect 2 fuel injection electrical connectors at rear of cylinder head.
  20. Connect 2 ignition coil electrical connectors.
  21. Install cylinder head cover.
  22. Install 7 cylinder head cover bolts. Tighten bolts to 60 in lb (7 Nm).
  23. Install vacuum pipe and 2 bolts at rear of cylinder head cover. Tighten bolts to 60 in lb (7 Nm).
  24. Connect vacuum tube to pipe.
  25. Connect loom holder to rear of cylinder head cover.
  26. Install 2 screws to high tension wire protectors.
  27. Install air hose to behind intake manifold.
  28. Install ISC air hose to idle speed actuator.
  29. Install PCV valve to cylinder head cover.
  30. Install air intake hose.
  31. Connect mass air flow sensor electrical connector.
  32. Install the following;
    • Air hose
    • Air ISC air hose
    • Breather hose
    • Vacuum hose from air intake hose
  33. Attach accelerator cable.
  34. Install 3 bolts that secure accelerator cable and air intake hose to cylinder head cover. Timing belt pulley timing marks kia-03-20-7035.gif

    NOTE: Timing belt pulley timing mark and timing mark must be aligned.
    Camshaft timing marks kia-03-20-7032.gif

    NOTE: The arrow at "2" on camshaft pulley must be aligned with timing mark on front housing.
  35. Install timing belt.
  36. Install timing belt cover.
  37. Pressurize fuel system.
  38. Start engine and check ignition timing.

Improper hose conection water coming out exhaust.


If your shure that a hose is on wrong then there is a place it goesonto that is also wrong . Two wromgs. The only place that a hse could be on wrong is at the exhaust asperater tube that hooks the EGR vavle to the exaust manifold. The heater hoses hook next to each other behind the engine going though the firewall. Follow these hoses back to the motor and see that they don't connect to the pipe on the lower left side of the exaust manifold. If its doing that remove it and see if you can find another hose the same size that will reach the exhaust tube and connect it and vise versa connect the other hose there. The Hoses can be alright though and the engine has a bigger problem a blown head gasket or cracked head. On some models the catalist converter has a hose hooked to it remove it and see itf water comes out, if shouldn't but if it does follow it back to the engine and unhook it there. If water ( Coolant comes out ) ( You may Have to add coolant not water to the cooling system to tell ) then this connection should be connected to a heater hose that you found going thogh the firwall. If you still dont find the problem and the cooling system holds presure and the water coming out the tailpipe is coolant and the engine runs OK ( I dought it). All engines produce a little water when running mainly when run shortly and not warmed up, it will appear black in color and not smell like antifreze. A prankster could have put the garden hose or man hose up the tailpipe to worry you some suspect those that helped point out the water in the first place. The exhaust hoses hook up to the air cleaner housing and pipe and the water hoses hook to the firewall a pipe on the back of the block and a short pipe hooked to the water pump. Repair manuels have pictures of the hoeses in the cooling system chapters.

How to replace the water pump on 1993 oldsmoblie achieva.


2.4 enigine is the harder of the 3 enignes. it will need a timing chain to be removed and a coolant tube in the back of the engine to be removed. this job on the book calls for almost 7 hours.

if its 3.3 or 3100 its alot easier.

3100 is just 4 10mm pulley bolts and 5 or 6 small 8mm water pump bolts.

3.3 is alittle more work, but same concept as 3100 engine. more owkr only cause its in a tighter area.

when you drop the tank by following these directions you will have access to the pump

1989-94 Vehicles
See Figures 1 and 2
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure, as outlined earlier in this section.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
CAUTION Observe all applicable safety precautions when working around gasoline. Do not allow fuel spray or fuel vapors to come in contact with a spark or open flame. Keep a dry chemical (Class B) fire extinguisher near the work area. Never drain or store fuel in an open container due to the possibility of fire or explosion.
  1. Use a suitable hand operated pump device to drain the fuel through the filler tube into an approved container.
Before disconnecting any fuel lines from the fuel tank, thoroughly clean around all hose connections.
  1. Disconnect the fuel filler vent hose from the fuel tank.
  2. Detach the fuel filler hose from the fuel filler inlet tube on the fuel tank. Position the hose out of the way.
  3. Disconnect the vapor hose from the front of the fuel tank.
  4. Detach the fuel return pipe and position the hose out of the way.
  5. Disconnect the two rear rubber exhaust hangers from the rear of the exhaust system and allow the exhaust system to hang down slightly.
  6. Unfasten the exhaust shield mounting bolts, then remove the exhaust shield.
  7. Support the fuel tank with a suitable jack.
  8. Remove the two bolts securing the fuel tank straps, then swing the straps out of the way.
  9. Lower the fuel tank enough to disconnect the vapor hose from the fuel sender assembly and the vapor hose from the vapor pipe at the rear of the fuel tank.
  10. Detach the electrical connector from the fuel sender assembly and remove the two retaining clips.
  11. Remove the tank from the vehicle, slowly to ensure all connections and hoses have been disconnected.
To install:
  1. Clean all parts well. Inspect the tank for dents, rust or other damage. On high-mileage vehicles, it may be good practice to remove the fuel pump module and replace the flexible strainer on the fuel pump.
  2. Position the fuel tank under the vehicle and raise the tank with a suitable jack.
  3. Connect the vapor hose to the fuel tank at the vapor pipe at the rear of the tank and connect the vapor hose to the sender assembly.
  4. Attach the electrical connector to the fuel sender assembly.
  5. Connect the fuel feed and return lines to the sender assembly.
  6. Raise the tank into position into the vehicle and swing the mounting straps under the tank.
  7. Install the front fuel tank strap mounting bolts and tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  8. Remove the jack.
  9. Connect the fuel return pipe to the fuel feed pipe.
  10. Attach the rear fuel feed pipe to the inlet side of the fuel filter.
  11. Tighten the line fittings to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm). Make sure to use a back-up wrench to prevent the fuel filter from turning.
  12. Connect the vapor hose to the vapor pipe at the front of the vehicle.
  13. Attach the fuel filler vent hose to the tank. Connect the fuel filler hose to the fuel filler neck of the tank.
  14. Install the exhaust heat shield and the mounting bolts.
  15. Position the exhaust system and install the rubber hangers.
  16. Carefully lower the vehicle, then refill the fuel system
  17. Connect the negative battery cable, then install the fuel filler cap, if not done already.
  18. Turn the ignition switchONfor 2 seconds, OFF for 10 seconds, thenONand check for fuel leaks.
