Sounds like it could be a couple things.
Heat creep - unit is getting hot so some onboard component is coming lose. I had this happen with a cable converter! I found if I applied pressure to a certain chip inside of the unit it would work fine... if I did not or if the pressure was a little off it would not tune in channels any more.
Some sort of short could be causing the unit to malfunction.
You could have a bad Capacitor... although the "tapping" thing sorta doesn't fit with this.... when my brothers unit died on him, I opened the case and found the bad Capacitor. You can tell cause the top will be popped out more than what you can see on the other capacitors in the unit. Also you can tell if there is a brown looking colour on the top of the capacitor as well. Replacing my brothers blown capacitor solved the problem and it has been going strong for 2-3 now.

SOURCE: sound cuts out- cable tv

I had the same problem when I installed the new HD Comcast cable box (DCH3200), initially with my CRT through RF, then with my HDTV through HDMI. Problem solved when I replaced the box with the Comcast RNG110 I got from my local Comcast. It is a neat miniaturized box and it works extremely well on HD. There is no power switch on the box so before activation do not forget to put it on with the remote (cable, power, the green light will come on).

Receiver when turned on cuts off and goes into protect mode

Try disconnecting all speaker wires form the back of the unit. If it still goes into protect, then you have a short in the amplifier that will need to be repaired.

check the connector blok on the back of your radio. sometimes on the double din radio's this connector doesnt fit snug into the back of your radio. check the clip portion and ensure that when you stick the blok in it clips in place.

Going to protective mode with load sounds, why?

Sounds like a speaker going bad or being over-driven.

On my Sony Surround Sound tuner, if I raise the volume up to a certain level (not that loud), I get a flashing sign ''protect'' and the sound to the speakers are cut.

Sony has protection in these receivers for two main reasons.

1 - Checking for DC voltages on the outputs to speakers. Not your particular problem.

2 - Excessive current being drawn from receiver on one or more of the speakers.

Number 2 should be your starting point in finding a solution. Put the volume level on Medium - 35 to 40 on the front panel. Now listen to all you speakers in turn. Any scratching noise will indicate a defective speaker. Remove this speaker from the receiver output and check again if the set goes into protection on high volume.

If you could not find any strange noises on the speakers, remove them one by one and test the set on high volume.

Never - attempt to disengage the protection on this amplifier. The only times we have found the amplifier to be defective with this protection error, it has done so no matter the volume level. Therefore I believe your problem to be a speaker or speakers.

Good luck!

DE 445 flashes "protect" and sound goes off when loud noises play on DVD

Check your speaker connections at the back of the receiver and at the speakers. You have a short. If you don't see anything obvious, disconnect your speakers at the receiver and play a dvd and turn up the volume. If it stays on, you have a wire or a speaker problem. If it cuts out , you have a DSP chip problem. Reconnect speakers one by one and test each speaker until it cuts off or you have fixed the problem. If you still have issues, post a comment and I can help you some more.

Amp keeps cutting off

Do you have heavy enough gauge wire supplying B+ to amp.Big amps draw a lot of current and require very heavy gauge wire. The longer the run the heavier the gauge needed.

Stuck!

I was able to fix this issue by opening up the receiver, removing the circuit board that the power button and speaker selector knob contact, and then reseating that board back onto the circuit board it was connected to (the one with the majority of the control buttons).  This completely resolved the problem.  The power button works again and the audio does not drop out anymore.
