Sounds like it could be a couple things.
Heat creep - unit is getting hot so some onboard component is coming lose. I had this happen with a cable converter! I found if I applied pressure to a certain chip inside of the unit it would work fine... if I did not or if the pressure was a little off it would not tune in channels any more.
Some sort of short could be causing the unit to malfunction.
You could have a bad Capacitor... although the "tapping" thing sorta doesn't fit with this.... when my brothers unit died on him, I opened the case and found the bad Capacitor. You can tell cause the top will be popped out more than what you can see on the other capacitors in the unit. Also you can tell if there is a brown looking colour on the top of the capacitor as well. Replacing my brothers blown capacitor solved the problem and it has been going strong for 2-3 now.
