Having trouble under standing rms with speakers. Some speakers rms is per speaker and other are for both speakers.I am looking for soundstream speakers that would be 150 rms per speaker. Thanks


rms is a method of measuring power (wattage) delivered from an amp to a speaker. In almost every case, wattage capacity of speakers is quoted PER SPEAKER. Likewise wattage output is quoted per amp output channel. Assuming a you plan on a single speaker on each output channel of your amp, you should be in good shape if your speaker wattage capacity equals or exceeds your amp's output rating. I've never seen speakers rated as wattage per pair.

(rms is the dominant way of measuring average watts of an ac sine wave signal)

Passive speakers don't have an output wattage rating, that would be applied to the amplifier :-) The INPUT wattage rating of these speakers is 5 watts RMS per speaker.

Depends on what output your stereo is. If you underrate the speakers (speaker watts is less than stereo output), the unit will sound louder for a while, then you end up blowing your speakers with the excess distortion. If you overrate the speakers (speaker watts is higher than stereo output) the speaker will not operate correctly and the distortion can damage it also. Its best to get a close match. Slightly higher is better. It is important you know actual wattage output not PMPO ( Peak music power output) A lot of stereos are rated at PMPO. The higher number sounds great but in reality, the figure is the MAX output and by then the sound is distorting badly. Distortion ruins more speakers than anything else...

The amplifier keeps burning the tweeters in the speakers after replacement


Please check the wattage of the replaced speakers, now check the cross over in the speakers, if the capacitors are short the voltage might flow into the tweeter coils to burnt them out. Also you can try and reduce the high frequency and also see if the tweeters heat up . If so use high wattage super cooled tweeters.
Check finally for fault in the amplifier output- high voltage/current.

Can auxiliary speakers be added to a Rowe/AMI Model CD 100K? If so, where do they connect?


Hello,

Yes they can. Above the amplifier compartment you should see the output package. The output package is where the phono speakers are connected to but this can be used to provide output to extention speakers. E1 to E7 tappings left and right provide outputs at different voltages/wattage. E1 left and right is the comon (or ground connection) E2 is the lowest tapping and E7 is the highest. Most people would connect extention speakers to E3 or E4 left & right with the comon connections of the speakers to one of the E1's.
There is also connections for 70 volt line speakers, these are used where long cable runs are needed and the speakers are then fitted with 70 volt drop down transformers to the correct wattage of the speakers. These are available from most good electroic suppliers such as R.S. or Maplins etc.

How can i get more power through 8 ohm speakers?


In addition to the impedance rating of a speaker, there is also a wattage rating. Ideally, power output of the amplifier should not exceed the power handling rating of the speakers. The input impedance of the speakers should match the amplifier output impedance for maximum power transfer (Rin = Rout where R is resistance in Ohms). Supplying more power or wattage to the speaker than it can handle will result in distortion, and if the output of the amp is high enough and present long enough, it will damage the voice coil of the speaker. Make sure that when comparing wattage ratings, you are comparing the same rating between amps & speakers. Watts can be expressed three different ways: "Peak", "Peak to Peak" and the industry standard "RMS". The relationship is such: an industry standard value of "70 Watts RMS" (70W RMS) equals "100 Watts Peak" (100W P) *and* also is the same as "200 Watts Peak to Peak" (200W P-P). Furthermore, there is no such thing as 200W "Music Power" (but is often expressed this way to inflate the RMS wattage rating (and usually is close to the P-P rating). A speaker is an electrical device, so most the things that happen to electrical devices when over powered can happen to speakers and amplifiers, too.

Increasing the signal source level (input signal to the amp via volume control) in an attempt to get more audio power to the speaker can overdrive the amplifier - resulting in "clipping". This is plainly heard as "muddied" sound. The otherwise loud, crisp, clean passages in music end up sounding garbled and unpleasant when an amplifier is over driven in this way. This can damage both the amp and the speaker.

Cheap amps with higher THD (total harmonic distortion) ratings sound worse than their counterparts with a lower THD rating - when all other variables are the same. You'll pay extra for lower THD values.

You might be able to make a speaker seem louder by positioning the speakers against a wall, on the floor, etc. Experiment; as it can make a significant difference in sound levels and low frequency bass sounds.

Your speakers may be underpowered by your receiver. Check the watts and impedance of the speakers, and the wattage of your receiver to make sure they closely match. (impedance is calculated in ohms- indicated by an omega symbol written near the wattage rating)
"Overload" may also mean that the amp went into protect mode, and that means that you're OVER-powering your speakers and it wants to protect them from damage due to impedance mismatch.
But- if the impedance and wattage match between the speaker and the receiver/amp, you should check the polarity of the speaker cables (+/-) BTW- never put 2 speakers in 1 output- that will almost always cause something like this and will sound bad.
