Battery keeps going dead. Have had 3 new altanators & 1 new battery. 5 mechanics has worked on it over the last 12 mos.has cost quit a bit of $. but still same thing. Seems to go down when setting over...

Try disconnecting the battery after you park the car in the evening. If there is a short, then the battery should still be good in the morning. if not, the battery is no good. Most common sources of shorts are the alternator ,or the starter. Good luck You take a voltmeter and take a reading across the battery posts. There should be no power on in the vehicle at all...everything turned off and key in the off position. A normal reading may between 12 and 14 volts. Record this reading in a notebook. Now..go pull a fuse in the fuse box. Just one..and go back and take another reading at the voltmeter. Was there any change? No? Pull another fuse. Now you have two fuses out. Take another reading. At some point...that reading will change. It will show an increased reading. You have just found which circuit is causing the drain. With the drain removed the available battery voltage will go up. just follow the affected curcuit, until you find the drain. if alternator curcuit is ok!! then you should have at least 14.2-14.7 volts at battery when running with everything off. good-day ! and good-luck!

It no longer keeps time right and the person who sold it to me told me to replace the c-mos battery but I was told its internal and I would need help even though I work on my 5 desktops all the time.

The c-mos battery does need to be changed, the outer casing should have a few screws "remove side panel" and that will expose the large motherboard, now! if you look carefully you will see a round battery that is shaped like a silver coin, remove it carefully and pay attention to the polarity + or - that way no mistakes are made when you install it. ( Before you begin unplug the computer)

Clock needs to be reset every time I switch on.

There are 3 reasons for that.
  1. Your CMOS battery ran out of charge. You may have to replace it. (Note: You can check whether it has no charge by using a Muti-meter or your mouth).
  2. You are Synchronizing the Clock from a Different Time Zone. Double click on Time panel in the task bar. Go to Time Zones and check. Check the Internet Time to check whether you Synchronize with a proper Time Server. (Note: You can try to start the PC without internet and check whether the time is changing)
  3. You have installed a Patch / Crack to a Software and it resets your Timer. Probably a Patch to an Anti Virus Software, Game or any other Application. You may have to Remove it to keep the clock Steady if it matters you.
If anything gives negative results what you have to do is to check the Event Viewer for any System/ Application related errors. To get the Event Viewer: Start -> Run (or hit Win key + R) and type in Eventvwr.msc and hit Enter key. Go to System and Application and Sort them using Date / Time (usually it is the default). Then watch for errors related with the System Clock. (Note: errors are in the color of Red with an X mark. Warnings are Yellow with an ! mark). If you are unable to understand let me know. You can Copy and Paste Here.

My dell inspiron 8500 wont start up whit the battery

if it is the original battery, it most likely needs replacement. Portable batteries have a expected life of 300 to 500 recharge cycles (18 to 24 mos) If a new battery does not charge, then a motherboard replacement is warranted.
