VERY gently tap it with a non-metal object, like a wood handle or something to see if that will loosen it up. Then, try using a flat-edged screwdriver to pry it loose from it's base, but VERY gently, so as not to damage it.

SOURCE: Emptying cylinder

I hope you've found out by now, but, in case you haven't, the latch to remove the canister is right by the handle on top of it, just don't lift until you release the latch with your thumb, it's got a safety to keep you from hitting the release when you're using that handle to carry the vacuum.  (good engineering).

you can download a manual from the dyson site, here:

SOURCE: my dyson dco4 wont pick up when upright

I was going crazy trying to figure out why my dyson wasn't picking up when using it on the carpet or floor, when it was just working 2 days ago! Since my husband was the last to clean the hair out of it, I decided to check to see if he put the plate back on correctly. He hadn't. I took it off and put it back on and it worked perfectly. It was only off by about an eighth of an inch, but if everything isn't on perfectly it won't work properly.

Power lost on dyson - what do i look for

If the hoover switches on then you may have a blockage in the cleaning head or pipe. If it does not switch on the you may have a break in the cable where it enters the machine. It is quite common for the cable to break there.
