Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console
Have you tried runnning it with the top off ?
is the fan working ?
if it is, is it fast and making a noise?
that would be overheating and shutting down to prevent heating
as you said Faulty power supply, if a power supply is faulty I would just replace the whole power supply as they are cheap on ebay.

SOURCE: help it freezes
Does this freeze up occur around the time the fan kicks on? I've seen several other contributors to FIXYA mention this as a "heat sink" issue. I guess the HD is getting over-heated & melting a soldered connection. This is definitely a problem that a tech should look at. Hopefully your console is still under warranty. If not, PSR has very decent rates for "out-of-warranty" work. You can contact them at www.psr1.com. Hope this helped.

SOURCE: My PS3 hdmi cable does not work
First off, if you want to use the hdmi remove the supplied composite cable from the back of the ps3.
You don't need both plugged in at the same time, and I'm not sure with the ps3 but some video devices will not enable both at once.
Have your tv selected for whatever hdmi input you have it plugged into. They should be labeled where you plug them in.
With the unit in standby, switch off and red light in front, hold the power button by the disc tray for 3-5 second. You will hear it beep, after the initial turn on beep, then you should see a display set up screen.
If you switch back to the composite, you will have to do this over again.
