Question about Panasonic PT-53WX42 53" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Green horizontal deflection

My 5 year Panasonic PT-53WX42 set developed a convergence problem where the green colors were not lining up properly with the other 2. Using a downloaded signal generator playing thru my DVD player I was able to determine that the horizontal deflection of the green color was about 5 percent less than the red and blue. The vertical alignments are excellent. Are there certain components that set the green horizontal gain. If so, where are they located in the chassis?

Re: Green horizontal deflection

Change both STK convergence IC's for reliability. They amplify/control both horiz and vertical. re-align after replacement.Locate them on the largest heat sink in your set!

A convergence problem first developed then just a horizontal lien across the screen

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

The colors on my tv doesn't line up right. It has a 3D look and i tried to converge it. It will not let me do it. Its a panasonic HDTV PT-47WX42, PT-47WX52, PT-53WX42, PT-53WX52, PT-56WX42, PT-56WX52

set uses two of the STK-392-110 chips for convergence.

Both will have to be replaced.

I have start to finish step by step instructions for this repair based on me doing it in hundreds of these sets.

If you want the instructions, do you have a email?

Panasonic PT-61HX42F shuts off automatically red light flashes, but before that happened the green color was way off

One of the convergence output IC's has died. However, when one goes the other is soon to follow so any good repair shop will insist on changing both of them. This is a common failure with all projection tv's as these amps work real hard and have a high failure rate. Average repair cost is usually between $200 and $300.

Green convergence on Panasonic PT-53WX42 is not ligning up...

Does not sound like the chips are bad.
What you need to adjust is "SKEW". You need to enter "service Mode" then go into "Coarse Convergence". Skew can be adjusted for all 3 colors. Unless you have the service manual, these corrections should not be attempted.

To clean the INSIDE of the screen, you really have to disassemble the TV. Remove all the screws that hold the "back" ( the piece with the mirror) to the front (screen) assembly.
The screen can be cleaned with a solution of diluted isopropyl alcohol, no more than a 50% solution. Drugstores will carry it, but it might be 70%-90%. Just dilute with distilled water (not tap water as it contains minerals). Personally I have used 70% with no ill side effects but 50% is recommended.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site They have put together convergence repair kits for most models.

The kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, etc. Everything you will need to do the repair yourself.
