Question about Air Conditioners

Whirlpool A/C Model #ACQ158XP

Our a/c window unit will not work. When we turn it on, it powers up but does not kick in. We don't hear the fan inside rev up. From time to time we would hear a squelling noise when we would turn it on but it would go away after the unit was completely on. I thought maybe it needed some oil. Now it won't come on at all. Is it possible the fan belt has popped or does it sound like something major?

Unfortunately, your model does not have a fan belt so you may need to have it serviced by a technician. Prior to calling one, clean the room air filter and hose off the coil from the outside if you can get to it. Unplug the unit first. The squealing may be a dry bearing in the room air fan. If you can get to the fan, put 2 or 3 drops of electric motor oil on the fan shaft and work it into the motor housing by hand. Make sure you are getting power at the outlet. If so and the unit does not show any signs of life (lights or a fan), probably the fuse inside the unit has blown and will need replacing. Good Luck.

I have a Whirlpool Model ACQ158XPO wall/window air conditioner. Motor comes on but it does not cool. Any suggestions?

Its really tough to troubleshoot window units without pulling the cover off. If I was standing there looking at it without tools in my hand I would first make sure the fan/cool switch was in the fan high cool mode and that the thermostat was turned all the way to the coolest setting. Beyond that it needs to go in for repair. Wish I could be more help. Good luck.

Replace the fan. The bearing is worn and it may need a new capacitor.

Unit lights up and hums but does not blow air

mcdevito75 here, Sounds like the fan motor is haging up or needs to be replaced, try the switch on/off then on/off a few times see if the fan kicks on, if not see your local a/c repair shop, they come to the house.

Getting into window unit is tricky. The motors go out quite often. Might be capacitor. But you have weigh wether it cost more to fix than replace. Rus
