AC Adapter Light Going on and off

My AC Adapter keeps going on and off. I have to move the cord around a lot before the light comes on in the adapter and the battery starts to charge. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to how to position the cord in order to get the power flowing.

Thanks for the help. I figured that was the case, but I'm glad to get verification of it happening to someone else before I go out and spend the money.

i had just started to have problems with my adapter cord out of nowhere. i have just bought my computer less than 4 months ago and im already having problems with the cord, but i found that when i fiddle with the wire a bit, the computer will start charging again, but if the wire is slightly moved, i have to fiddle with the wire again. i dont want to go out and buy another one, but i need a new cord right away. is there some kind of warranty still in effect? i only had the damn thing for less that 4 months

This happened to me as well. I did some research online and found that it is a common complaint for the AC adapters that come with these laptops. Basically, the wiring is very fragile, and the adapters only tend to last a year or two. Unfortunately, you will probably need to buy a new adapter.

This is only the first of many things you may need to do to determine the fault. But it is a process for determining the exact cause.

Make sure the ac adapter is correctly plugged into the notebook and into the power cord.

If everything is plugged in correctly and it still will not power on, follow these steps to complete a 'power reset' of the notebook.

  1. Unplug the ac adapter. Keep ac adapter unplugged.
  2. Remove the battery and keep the battery unplugged.
  3. Hold the power button down for 15-20 seconds. (Nothing will appear on the display and none of the lights will light up.)
  4. Release the power button and plug in the ac adapter ONLY. (Please note that a power indicator light should be lit on the ac adapter when it is plugged in).
  5. Normally power on the notebook.
  6. If the unit does not power on, remove the ac adapter and insert the battery into the system.
  7. Plug the ac adapter back into the system, the battery charging indicator light will light up.
If the battery charging indicator light does not light up, the ac adapter may not be providing proper power to the unit, and may need to be replaced.

I got a compaq c36 it was working fine but now it wont switch on or anything do you now what it could be

1. Plug the laptop into AC power.

2. Take out the battery.

3. Try a different outlet.

4. Look for the light that indicates that the AC adapter is plugged in. If that light isn't on, try plugging and unplugging the AC power jack and moving it around until the light shows its connected. If no light comes on, its possible you have a bad DC jack or the AC adapter needs to be replaced.

5. If the indicator light is on and the laptop won't power on, then it's possible you have a bad switch board or stuck button. Make sure no buttons are stuck. Conversely, push hard on the power button and move it around in order to make sure you're making good contact.

6. If you know the battery has a charge, unplug the AC adapter and connect the battery. If it turns on, then you can be sure you have a bad DC jack or a bad AC adapter.

Advent N270 netbook will not charge. Orange light comes on initially then goes off. Also when I wiggle the plug into the laptop the light flashes on and intermittently.

It sounds like either a bad connection on the motherboard or a broken wire in the adapter making intermittent connection.

1. With the power adapter disconnected, do you have a power light? This would indicate the adapter is good and the plug is questionable.

2. Check your power adapter output with a multi-meter.(be sure to wiggle the wires around) If the power fluctuates, replace the plug.

3. If the power is solid, replace the motherboard connector.

Will Not charge with brand new a/ power cord it will at times power on if moved the right way but quickly powers off if moved the port inside looks to be fine But I hear there is a pin type thing inside...

The problem is with the AC adapter itself and is a very common problem with Dell AC adapters. My suggestion would be to get an aftermarket AC adapter that can be purchased on eBay as the Dell adapter is around 100.00. You can pick up an aftermarket one on eBay for around 20.00. The problem is a resistor inside the AC adapter that senses when a Dell branded adapter is inserted. What happens is that the resistor will get damaged and since it doesn't recognize the charger as a Dell branded one anymore it won't charge. However it will still run the laptop as long as it's connected. A lot of aftermarket AC adapters bypass this function and work perfectly fine.

Hp zv6000 batt ran down now will not charge or power up on ac power

This can be caused by a few problems, but I think yours is caused by a faulty power jack on laptop or your power adapter is no good.

Power Adapter: Plug it into the wall and notice if the light on adapter lights up or not. If it does light up, test it with a multimeter for proper voltage output. The output is labeled on the adapter sticker, an example would be "19 volts". If the adapter checks out okay then you need to look at where the adapter plugs into the laptop (power jack). If the power adapter did not check out okay, replace it.

Power jacks are known to come loose from the motherboard by the power cord being moved around from normal daily use. What happens is the jack breaks the solder joint and loses the connection. You most of the time see this problem getting worse by having to move your power cord around to get your charging light to come on.

If the computer is under warranty still, this is an issue you would turn it in for work. If it is not under warranty you are either going to need a replacement motherboard or replace/re-solder the jack (cheaper). If you are familiar with soldering circuit boards you can fix this yourself, if you are not experienced, you will have to take it into a electronics repair shop.

The jack and solder are very cheap, it is the labor that will cost you.

Hope this helps give you some direction as to where to look. Good luck.

I had the same problem but what you can do is...

  7. Plug the ac adapter back into the system, the battery charging indicator light will light up.
If the battery charging indicator light does not light up, the ac adapter may not be providing proper power to the unit, and may need to be replaced.
  8. If its not the batery or AC adapter you might have to send it to Texas, just go to www.Acer.com

On AC Power

It does sound like a power cord problem. You can test it by getting a digital mulimeter and checking to see if there is 19.5 Volts DC power on the contact points of the barrel plug that goes into the laptop.
