I just repaird a unit with this same symptom. Yours may be the same. The plastic part that holds the switch was broken (pins). See the diagram at http://www.partselect.com/Schematics/Whirlpool/KAZVHYR3.gif Item 15 is the part. The switch sets on a coupld pins and the pins break easily, thus the switch falls off and the dispensor lever can't operate it. If you look up inside with a flashlight you can see the switch, etc. and should be able to tell if it's held in place properly.

SOURCE: ice "door" on dispenser
This happened to me this week. I removed the cover as you suggested. After sliding it up you must disconnect the ribbon cable to the buttons, which involves depressing a locking tab. I then noticed one of the two plastic mounting points for hinges for the ice chute door flap (part of the black plastic frame) was cracked. I repaired this (the part was still hanging by a thread of plastic) using two part 5 min epoxy resin. Note disc-like damper which must be inserted into the cylinder when reattaching the door flap and attaches to an arm that connects to the door flap near the hinge. I'll let the epoxy set overnight before attempting reassembly...

I have run into this before and found it very helpful to re-level the refrigerator. By leaning the fridge back toward the wall about an inch helped keep the water and ice in the tray. Remember to remove items that block air flow in the freezer. Remove the ice bin and clean it then start over with the fridge leaning back a little. Hope this helps.

The motor is behind the ice bin. Remove the ice bin and see if the motor will turn with out the load of the bin. If it will see if you can turn the augur in the bin by hand. It could be locked up by ice in the crusher or tunnel.
If the motor doesn't turn, test it to see if it gets voltage when you depress the switch. If it gets voltage and doesn't turn it's bad. It could also be two weak to turn a load.

Check the ice storage container. The
ice dispenser will not dispense ice until the first supply ice has dropped into
the ice storage container.Remove excess ice from the back of the
ice container. Make sure ice cubes are not jammed between the ice maker and the
back of the ice container.
auger won't engage or turn
to dispense ice.Remove the ice bucket and with a hair dryer warm up
the inside where the fork is that turns the auger in the bucket and try it and
if this does not help then you will have to replace the auger motor ,, chances
are the motor is just froze up .--------
If there is nothing jammed then try this./Remove the ice bin out.And then clean the ice bin.
Rotate the auger with your hand.If its hard then there is problem with auger motor. If the auger is not rotating fine then its faulty auger motor or the auger motor is frozen,if you notice ice getting collected there.
Take a hair dryer and blow hot air on the auger motor for few minutes.Take care you dont blow hot air continuously.
But if that is not helping then disconnect auger motor connecting wire wait for 2 minutes clean the connector and reconnect the connector back and see.If that is not helping at all. Then, replace the auger motor.
