The numbers you gave show a 250 watt power supply. Sounds small to me. Replacement is pretty straightforward. If you have a Fry's electronics around they will have it. If you can get it online check Newegg, I have bought many items from them.
A Retail box purchase will have instructions, many extras including many types of wiring and connectors, etc. OEM probably no instructions but wiring should be there. The OEM type is for experts putting it together. But it is like I said, very easy to replace. First thing unplug unit (computer) first. Then press the start button on the computer this should discharge any electricity left. then take screws off making notes where they came from and sizing. Best not to do on carpet screws will get lost in it. unplug the wiring to the power supply, and then do the reverse. Assuming you bought the unit already, if not take that unit to electronic store to match, Best Buy also would have some.
Then put it all back together. Lets us know how it went.

You either need a cutting edge power supply or an older one The only thing you need to know is are you using mostly sata hard drives or ide hard-drives and does the graphics card require an extra plug Most power supplies have enough connections for most situations. I buy mine at Tiger Direct (Canada). In the USA many buy from NewEgg. Many other after market places exist so prices may vary. I like to have many y connectors to split the power or switch a connector back to ide power wires etc.

Buy a generic case that will accept the power supply you need. Of course you will need to transfer everything from the old case to the new case.

SOURCE: Not sure about upgrading power supply

First, let me say for the record that I would recommend listening to HP even though it sounds like their just covering their buts. If you choose not to listen to HP, here's a couple of good links to information on the additional 4 pins. It looks like the extra pins are for extra power requirements like dual SLI graphics boards for example.

Hello, please can you help me i have a lenovo thinkcentre m57p 9196 and i am wanting to upgrade my power supply to either 350w or 400w, does anyone know what type of supply would i need for this unit

The best way to get a new switch mode power supply is to remove the existing power supply and take it to the computer shop. You can see the various types of connectors on the existing power supply, just select a 350W or 400W power supply with the same type of power connectors as your existing power supply.

I am replacing a motherboard with a G31-M7 TE and find that my existing power supply has a 20 pin plug consistant with the old motherboard but the new one has a 24 pin socket. Why is this and do I need to...

New motherboards have a 24-pin power connector. Here is a diagram of both plugs:

pgh_pa_guy_3.jpg

You can see that the two are almost identical. The extra 4 pins on the 24-pin connector provide extra connection points for a few voltages. Newer boards and processors need more current, and the extra pins were added to prevent overloading.

Adapter cables are available to go from your 20-pin power supply plug to the 24-pin motherboard connector. Here's one from TigerDirect, and other vendors have them as well. If you're not making other changes than replacing the motherboard, you shouldn't need more than this adapter.

If you are upgrading your processor along with the motherboard, you should probably replace the power supply too. Older power supplies are often in the 300-watt range, and this is too low for reliable operation with new processors, motherboards and video cards. A new 500 or 600-watt supply is not expensive, and would give you the 24-pin power connection the motherboard needs.

Hope this has helped. Thanks for using Fixya!

How to use ATX-250-12z SMPS with 24 pin

Chances are that 250w power supply is not going to power a motherboard with a 24 pin connector, but you can try.
You will need to purchase a 20 to 24 pin adapter cable.

What is the p7 connector on a atx-1956-d for? the upgraded power supply has no provision for this connector? help please!!!!!!!!! gjohannsen@verizon.net

This is not a problem, and as it sounds, is not used in your system.

Some video cards have such huge processing power that they need thier own supply, as it would draw too much current from the motherboard otherwise. Below is a web site which reinforces this information, and gives an explanation of each connector.

Or do I not understand you. Do you have one less, or one too many?

Want to upgrade power supply to be compatible with my computer

This is a common misconception about pwr supplies. What is important are the connectors (type and number). The simplest way is to remove the power supply and match the mother board connectors(the 2 different ones) and the number of pin connectors you need for the drives. I could not find a picture of the mother board to tell you which ones will fit but if you have a used computer dealer in your area he can. The physical match up is what is important as the pin outs are tech standard. Hope this helps.

I have a Gateway 510xl and would like to upgrade the power supply

Changing out power supplies is not that difficult task. Upgrading to a 550 Watt power supply would be a good idea because it will give you more power than you need at the moment. You can google the power supply with the word problems with it and see what comes up. The main thing to be sure of when selecting a new power supply is to make sure that you get one with the appropriate connectors for your hard drive, motherboard and processor. For example if you have a SATA Hard drive then you will need a PSU that has SATA power connectors. Most newer power supplies (PSU) have these. The box should list what connectors it has.

I have an The Biostar U8668D - Version 7.1 Socket 478 microATX Motherboard. And my power supply stop working. I was wondering if i have to get the same one or i can use any kind of power supply.

Most modern power supplies will work they most all have a 24 pin connector for power which you only need 20 but you can still use the power supply either the last 4 connectors split off or you just let them hang off the upper side of connection( all explained in directions with most power supplies) you can mostly upgrade to a higher wattage power supply. so lets say you have a 300 watt one now. you can upgrade to a 500 watt one. just make sure it is of ATX standard.

HP Pavilion 250 watt PSU that includes a Nvidia GeForce 9300

The maximum output of a PSU simply means it is able to supply a certain amount of power. It can also deliver anything under the wattage. Where you fry things is where the connectors are wrong. HP, COmpaq, Dell, IBM have all, at times, used nonstandard connectors in their PCs. If you take something with a standard connector, and use it in a machine where that connector needs to nonstandard, you can fry stuff.

A new power supply will fix your problem, and when the fuse blows do not replace it. It blows to protect your computer. please replace with a new power supply.
