Question about Refrigerators

Frigidaire Gallery Stainless Steel Appliance finish defect. The Smudge-Proof finish on my Frigidaire refrigerator began peeling off after I owned the product for 14 months. It appears to be a clearcoat paint that has begun peeling around the handle on the door surface. I own several stainless steel appliances by different manufacturers and all are 3-5 years older than the Frigidaire. All of the other appliances have a flawless finish with a quick wipe of a stainless steel cleaner as opposed to my refrigerator which has a 5 inch diameter spot next to the handle. I had contacted Electrolux/Frigidaire customer service and they asked if the clear plastic protective cover had been removed. I assured them that I had done that when I installed the unit. They stated that a cosmetic defect like this is not covered under their warranty and therefore not covered by the extended warranty I had on the unit. They offered no other remedy for this problem. I assume the door needs to be stripped of this clearcoat finish, but I am concerned about damaging the Stainless Steel underneath. Any suggestions?

Frigidaire Gallery & Professional appliances put a micro-coating over their brushed stainless to help prevent smudges and fingerprinting. However, if this coating has begun to peel off there isn't much you can do about it. You can order a new door for it for around $250-$400 depending on the door. Very rare for this to happen. If was a common problem, they wouldn't make it like this.

How To Clean Stainless Steel Appliances

First do a quick wipe of the appliance with a gentle liquid dish detergent & water mix, dry with a clean towel. After washing you’ll likely see the smudges and marks still hanging in there. You can buff out each smudge with a lint-free towel and some pressure, but try one of these items instead to bring back the shine and quickly remove those pesky fingerprints and smudges:
  • Olive Oil (just a dab will do)
  • Mineral Oil (Baby Oil)–Just a dab will do
  • Club Soda (especially good for removing streaks and heat stains)
  • Rubbing Alcohol
  • Vinegar (great for polishing too)
Apply directly to a lint-free cloth and wipe down surface, follow up with a clean dry cloth to bring appliance to a mark-free shine.
  • Avoid using cleaners or cleaning tools that are abrasive since they can mar the surface (even some soft-scrubbing creams can cause damage).
  • When cleaning the surface, wipe down the appliances along the grain of the stainless steel for best results.
  • Don’t clean stainless steel with bleach (diluted or otherwise), this can damage the finish.
  • Don’t forget to open the refrigerator or oven door, you’ll likely see a mess of smudges along the edge of the door.

Frigidaire problems

Use the link below to view and read the user manual. If this is a used refrigerator it is possible that there may be a problem but it should be minor. The refrigerator section is cooled by air from the freezer. This problem is usually caused be excessive frost but you should not have frost buildup in only 24 hours.
There is also parts lists and diagrams.on the site.
I am also including a link to youtube videos about refrigerator problems.

Not cooling at all, compressor & fan next to compressor not working

Hello friend, thank you for your post!

It sounds like there could be an issue within the sealed system or control panel of your Frigidaire refrigerator. Are the lights still showing on the front and inside your appliance? If they are, I would recommend a reset to the refrigerator, which you can do by unplugging the appliance or flipping the household circuit breaker for ten minutes. Once you have performed the reset if the compressor or fan does not start up I would contact a professional to accurately diagnose your refrigerator to determine the root cause. -Matt

In order to put your Frigidaire refrigerator FGHB2866PF into demo mode you would need to push and hold the "up arrow" on your freezer and the "down arrow" on your refrigerator for five seconds. Once your appliance has went into demo mode both the refrigerator and freezer display should read 77. Hope this information helps. -Matt

Stainless steel cleaner damage to lacquered finish?

Most stainless products don't have a lacquer coating. That's why stainless is so nice. Go over it lightly with a soft scouring pad like scotch brite to remove the marks. Just follow the grain.

Rusting of the door on a stainless steel refrigerator

True stainless steel will not rust, but it can get rust stained, which could be removed. Without any further info about your situation, I'd have to guess that you have a high iron content in your water supply, and thus rust issues with your sinks, etc., unless you have a good iron reducing softener and the water to the refrig is not running through that softener. Again, without further info, I'm guessing the rust issue is at or below the water dispenser area. Keeping the water from spilling over the drip tray will help. You might try Wink rust remover, but do test it on an inconspicuous area first to make sure it will not adversely affect the finish in a visible area.

Exterior finish on stainless steel model peeling

Just a thought. Our frigidaire stainless steel refrigerator came with a temorary protective film on the steel parts that we peeled off after it was installed. Is it possible you never removed your film when you got your refrigerator? That may be what is starting to peel off now. Again, just a thought, I could be wrong.
