EMachine running Windows XP. Did a factory restore after son downloaded a virus. Since then, whenever this computer is connected to the internet via our Linksys Wireless-G modem, and ONLY ON OUR ACCOUNT (not on the neighbor's unsecured account!) it will randomly reboot.
No warning, no error message, it's just like someone hit the power button. Like I said, the timing is random. Does not appear to be linked to any kind of power saver, sleep, screen saver etc. mode. Could happen after two minutes, could happen after 20 minutes, it's random.
The computer has been taken apart, cleaned, checked for overheating (it's not), run for many hours with a shareware program called CPU Stability Test 6.0 with no found issues, and my son can play cd-rom games or be on the neighbor's wireless account all day without the problem occurring.
My husband and I also use another PC in the house with our wireless account with no problems, and the rebooting occurs on my son's computer whether the other computer is on or off, surfing the net or not - makes no difference.
We're stumped! Think you can figure it out?

- Nope- you got it backward. The computer reboots when it's connected to MY router. And yes, virus and firewall all up to date and on. The issue is only when my son's computer is connected to my router. We have another computer, connecting to the same router, with no problem.
The first thing to do is to try and stop it rebooting, it could be a driver problem that panics the system...just a guess though. Right-click 'My Computer' then click properties, go to the 'Advanced' tab and in startup and recovery click settings. In system failure untick 'Automatically restart' then 'OK' back to the desktop. Now try to cause the problem again, the chances are, rather than restarting, it will panic and present you with a blue screen and lots of white writing. Look especially at the top few lines, specifically there will be a bug check code and a title e.g. 0x00000001c IRQL_NOT_LESS_NOR_EQUAL or something like that (if this is the problem). If you get this, post back with the information and someone will be able to pinpoint the exact problem for you. Hope this helps...
Check to see if you nieghbor is not playing tricks on you. This sounds rel fishy that your computer reboots when connected to this guys router. Some one is loading something as soon as it is connected. Try loading it with you wireless acount instead of the nieghbors. Also make sure you have your current antvirus and firewalls loaded. But also check to see if Conflicker is an issue, this is a new virus that uses other computers as robots causing them to reboot and install software and make them do all kinds of illgal activites and this one writes to the bios.
Hope this information give you some idea please rate accordenly thanks.

- Better rting please we rely on your rating to help you with your free questions thanks
the virus possibly messed with your ram, and may have set a bug in windows causing the random shutdown. I would go to microsoft.com and download the malicious bug removal software , run it and see if it can locate any problems some thing else maybe occurring , someone is remotely operating your computer and could be shuting it down to stop you from using it. I would turn off the remote desktop function. this may stop the problem
