It may be a vacuum leak, or something to do with the intake. Best way to tell if it's a vacuum leak, is to play with the heater vent selector after you finish driving the truck for a while.if it pakes a faint Ppssssssssttt noise, and you hear the little air flaps closing and opening, the vacuum is Ok. You may also want to check the points on the distributor. they become blackened with soot and grit, and won't distribute a healthy spark to the spark plugs. the cap un-clips fairly easily, and can be cleaned with some alcohol, and a cloth. if it's really dirty, or it looks like there was water in there, you will need to replace the pickup coil at the bottom of the distributor housing, along with the wiper arm, and distributor cap.

Truck idles fine. put in gear and apply gas it dies

Not sure this helps but I have run into several Ford pick up trucks that will idle all day but the moment it was put into gear and accelerated it would die. Fix was a new fuel pump. Had enough pressure to idle but not to take the gas. Your question did not include a make or model but first thing would be to check the fuel pressure at idle and see if it drops an acceleration. it is possible to have pressure but not volume.

My 2003 eclipse will idle fine but when put in reverse or drive it wants to die.

You should first get the engine scanned for trouble codes.
Try a new fuel filter, or have the fuel pressure tested. If fuel pressure is good, try some injector cleaner. If still no help, time for a tune-up with new plugs and wires, filters, pcv valve. If still no help, possibly the catalytic converter may be plugging up, or your egr valve needs cleaning. Could be a lot of things-you just have to start eliminating one by one. short of a shop running diagnostics and testing to find the problem. Good luck.

Starts just fine but dies at idle. will keep running when stepp[ng on gas pedal

if the car runs fine at high revs, I suggest just turning the idle revs up 150ish, it could be a block cat converter, or restricted airflow making it die. but quick fix turn revs up 150rpm will do no harm and if it dies at higher revs, take it 2 the garage to see if they can find the thing.

When i pull up or stop the bike it just dies other

Your idle circuit in the carb can be clogged. Have you tried to set and adjust the idle? Have you tried running with the choke on a bit. This problem can be due to
  • 1) clogged idle circuit in the carb.
  • 2) ignition timing
  • 3) Vacuum leak at carb to head mount.
  • 4) restriction in tank port, or clogged screen in tank valve.
Hope this helps.

Fuel Problem

If you have 2 carbs that work on another unit but not this one then that narrows down the fuel problem to either an intake/ vacuum leak or bad fuel in the tank.
The compression sounds a tad high which could indicate valve timing ( exhaust opening late or not long enough)
On the ignition side you could have a bad CDI , weak pulser coil or sheared flywheel key.
I believe I would lean toward suspecting the ignition. I had a Honda that gave me fits acting like a lean issue. I was in that carb 25 times if I was in it once. Same thing, idled fine but died on acceleration. It was the CDI. Put a spark tester inline with your spark plug and see if the unit dies due to lack of spark.

1. idles didn’t adjust right.
2. check the timing
3. check your fire order
4. check your distributor cap. Maybe it is leaking
