Probably shut down by thermal protection settings in the BIOS; either fan is insufficient or something wrong with board/CPU; if the problem existed across 2 boards, I'd have to expect you have a fried CPU. Get a used replacement at RePC.com (so you don't have a big $ investment in troubleshooting.) Alternatively suspect failed HD (boot from a CD or floppy, esp useful diagnostically if you can disconnect the drive). Here in Seattle "Seattle Laptop Recyclers" (or some variation on that name - Aurora Ave N.) will diagnose and repair for $35 plus parts... it might be cheapest to ship it to them. Not a laptop? RePC repair service is very reasonable (I don't work for either company.)

Toshiba A135-S4527 starts to power up then shuts down.

When the CPU overheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermaloverload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. If this is theproblem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes the problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are cloggedwith dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan.
If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make surethe vents are clear and dust free. Use a small brush and can of compressed airto do this.

I have a Toshiba Satelllite A350 Laptop. One morning I tried to power up the unit and all it did was go through its initial start up with the cooling fan running for about 5 seconds and a few display...

Dear Friend,

The problem could just be fix by either removing the battery and press the power button for about 30 seconds (this option will flush the memory) or remove the memory and try with only one (if you have more than one). You may also boot up your laptop without the battery.

Good luck! and I hope it works!

Hi,

There are two harware you should check,

First the memory, it might be malfunctioning, if you have an extra memry card, try to swap it just to test the syatem.

Second will be the power supply unit or PSU, that is already overheating and shutting itself down, thus its not powering the your hard disk. try to replace it if you have an extra PSU.

Those are the most probable problem you have, PSU is the main problem in any desktop that was always been overlooked!

Hope that helps you out!

Thanks for using Fixya!

somewhere I read that a solution was to unplug the power and remove the battery, then hold the power on button down for 30 seconds
put the power back on and try to start
well the first attempt failed but I thought, try one more time, make sure it's at least 30 seconds and my toshiba came back to life -

Power supplies shut off automatically when one of the voltage wires is shorted to ground somewhere. This is why you see the fan kick over for a second and quit. This is probably a bad motherboard.

Does not power stay on

try this with just the ac plugged in and the battery removed. Sometimes the battery, when fully discharged, can cause the system to shut down.

The laptop doesnt start up. cooling fan is brocken. thermal oil is old and almost dry and little

Sometimes depending on the version of BIOS there is a thermal shut down feature,If the CPU gets to hot it will shut the entire system down. What you can do is replace the CPU fan and apply more grease in between the heat sink and the CPU chip.If this does not solve your problem then you may have damaged the CPU.the best way to fix this is to replace the motherboard and CPU.Try replacing the fan first because if your computer has the thermal shut down feature then chances are that it protected the motherboard and CPU from any damage.Try the simple things first! GOOD LUCK.
