Throttle acceleration


With high idle, I usually block off the mouth of throttle body, engine idling, it should kill the engine. If blocking off the mouth of throttle body has very little or no effect on the idle, you got false air getting in there from, somewhere. Just my opinion.

Idles high when in park or neutral


A vacuum leak might cause that?
Check and clean the throttle body and idle air system.
Check anything that has to do with throttle position-- air mass, like tps--maf--map sensors, where applicable. Also, block off mouth of throttle-body, see if any effect on idle? It should kill the engine. If very little or no effect, you got false air getting in there from somewhere.
Are there any applicable trouble codes?
I don't know your year--make--model? So if I posted anything that doesn't apply, ignore it.

Revs high when i change gear


Is it possible the clutch pedal is interfering with the throttle? Start the engine in neutral and allow it to idle. Press only the clutch pedal down and see if this increase the engine speed. If it does speed up the engine and slows back down when you release the clutch then somehow this operation is where your fault lies. If it doesn't alter the idle speed, then rev your engine and release the throttle to see if it returns to idle immediately. If it is slow to return to idle then your throttle cable could be sticking. This means when you change gear lifting off the throttle has little effect and depressing the clutch to change gear causes the engine to race as the throttle is still partially open.

High idle is usually caused by a vacume leak. First place to check is the cold air intake manifold. All hoses, throttle body, and sensors. Throttle Position(TPS), Mass Airflow(MAS), Idle Air Control Motor (valve) IAC. Controls Idle speed

A malfunctioning throttle system can cause both a high idle as well as an engine stall.

A dirty air intake or cracked air intake tube is often the culprit.

Chainsaw runs but will not idle


Check the owners manual for the location of the idle screws. There should be two (low/high). After starting the saw, use a small screwdriver to turn the screw counterclockwise until the proper idle speed is reached. These screws are usually recessed in the housing on the left side of the saw, and may have an L and an H next to the holes. Be careful, as sometimes these are plastic screws and you don't want to strip them. Note the original position by looking into the hole so you have a starting reference point. If the screws have no effect on the idle, you may have a throttle linkage problem (if the saw will only run at high speed and the throttle trigger has no effect). Your goal is to have an idle speed that won't kill the engine but will also keep the chain from moving or creeping on the guide.

My Hyundai Santa Fe 2004 doesn't shift down from overdrive when driving at 70 mph. Recently replaced the crankshaft sensor and timing belt. It is an automatic and the other gears seem to shift alright....


You might try testing the tps. It may have a dead spot at the high end of the throttle opening. Make sure the resistance continues to change as you open the throttle all the way.

Throttle Position Sensor

Operation The throttle position sensor is a rotating type variable resistor that rotates with the throttle body-s throttle shaft to sense the throttle valve angle. As the throttle shaft rotates, the throttle angle of the sensor changes and the ECM/PCM detects the throttle valve opening based on the TPS output voltage.
Removal & Installation
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the sensor connector.
  3. Remove the sensor retaining screws. Remove the sensor from its mounting.
To install:
  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
Testing 2.4L Engine
  1. Disconnect the sensor connector.
  2. Measure the resistance between terminal 1 (sensor ground) and terminal 2 (sensor power).
  3. Specification should be 3.5-6.5 kohm.
  4. Connect and analog ohmmeter between terminal 1 (sensor ground) and terminal 3 (sensor output).
  5. Operate the throttle valve slowly from the idle position to the full open position, and check that the resistance changes smoothly in proportion with the throttle valve opening angle.
  6. If the resistance is out of specification, or fails to change smoothly, replace the sensor.
2.7L Engine
  1. Disconnect the sensor connector.
  2. Measure the resistance between terminal 2 (sensor ground) and terminal 1 (sensor power).
  3. Specification should be 3.5-6.5 kohm.
  4. Connect and analog ohmmeter between terminal 2 (sensor ground) and terminal 3 (sensor output).
  5. Operate the throttle valve slowly from the idle position to the full open position, and check that the resistance changes smoothly in proportion with the throttle valve opening angle.
  6. If the resistance is out of specification, or fails to change smoothly, replace the sensor.
  1. Disconnect the sensor connector.
  2. Measure the resistance between terminal 2 (sensor ground) and terminal 1 (sensor power).
  3. Specification should be 1.6-2.4 kohm.
  4. Connect and analog ohmmeter between terminal 2 (sensor ground) and terminal 3 (sensor output).
  5. Operate the throttle valve slowly from the idle position to the full open position, and check that the resistance changes smoothly in proportion with the throttle valve opening angle.
  6. If the resistance is out of specification, or fails to change smoothly, replace the sensor.
3.5L Engine
  1. Disconnect the sensor connector.
  2. Measure the resistance between terminal 3 (sensor ground) and terminal 1 (sensor power).
  3. Specification should be 3.5-6.5 kohm.
  4. Connect and analog ohmmeter between terminal 3 (sensor ground) and terminal 2 (sensor output).

My xj6 runs at high rpms and accelerates on its own


None of those possible problems have anything to do with idle speed. The first thing might be a very weak throttle return spring. The next would be a sticky throttle cable or foot feed pedal that isn't moving freely. Another possibility is a vacuum leak somewhere. Did changing the spark plug in #1 cylinder help the misfire? If not, you may have a partially plugged injector. Fixing the misfire will only increase idle speed some more. Look for an idle speed motor near the throttle body that is supposed to raise idle speed when the engine is cold and lower it back when the engine warms up. Check to see if it is holding the speed too high. If the throttle position sensor tells the computer where the idle speed motor is set, then it could have an effect on idle speed if the sensor is bad. The position sensor is just a fancy potentiometer. Hope some of this helps.
