My laptop needs hours (literally) to boot and I guess it is a hard drive problem. Is there a tool to check this?

Try to save all your data, guess your hard disk is failing.
OK, it's just a general idea; you should check your hard disk's status with a diagnostics app:

@rkbrown1_rb

If your Dell diagnostics shows no fault on the hardware (hdd, memory, chipset, videocard, etc.) but still same issue occurs, I recommend doing another test using a different utility. Try using Hiren's Boot CD that can be found here and try running the S&M Stress Test 1.9.1 and Video Memory Stress Test 1.7.116. If your computer hangs while doing the stress tests, the video card or CPU might be failing already.

Good Luck.

How do I fix or repair my HP mini 1000 Netbook with it being stuck in a boot loop? I am getting the "unmountable_boot_volume screen. My netbook does not have a CD ROM drive.

Check your bios to ensure its first boot option is set to the hard drive instead of CD drive or USB drive. If you have a thumb drive plugged in, unplug the USB and try again. On your boot screen there should be an option to hit a key to enter bios (Usually Esc, F2 or Del). Hit whichever key it requests and enter Bios. Once in Bios look for Boot Order and check to see where the Hard Drive is in the order. If it is not set to #1 then do as it says to set it to the first option. Once done hit F10 to save and Exit and return to boot.

My computer is so slow, and I want to just wipe everything off the harddrive! how do i reset it all the way? i've tried everything possible it seems like!

Computers slow down due to lack of regular maintenance.
You need to defragment the hard drive:

How to use the Windows Defrag tool:

· To start Windows Defrag, double click on the "My Computer" or "Computer" Icon on Desktop or in Start Menu.

· Next Right click on the "C:" drive (Or the drive you wish to Defrag) and select properties from the list that appears...

· From the next menu select "Tools" and then "Defragment Now"

· The Disk Defragmenter screen will now appear, Click on Analyze. This will check your drives and will only take a few seconds. If your result shows a lot of red like mine (see picture below) then click on "Defragment" to continue) Be warned this may take several hours, so don't run it, if you are going to need the computer in a rush. Some people tend to run it over night or before they go to work.

Acer aspire 5536 when i turn on my laptop msg comes up say Broadcom Base Code PXE-2.1 v1.0 PXE-E61:MEDIA TEST FAILURE, CHECK CABLE PXE-M0F: EXITING BROADCOM PXE ROM. OPERATING SYSTEM NOT FOUND

It is looking for a boot device, depending on how you have your boot settings in the Bios configured, i would guess that it is looking for a network boot not being able to find another boot device.

This usually points to hard drive failure, to check this:
  1. Go into the Bios and see if the hard drive / DVD are recognised
  2. If they are, and you have the option of a recovery partition, boot from that and let the system repair itself
  3. If you do not have a recovery aprtition, or cannot access it, load the Windows DVD Rom, allow it to find an existing version of windows and repair it
  4. If it does not find an existing version of windows, you will need to do a reformat and claen install.
If when booting from the DVD Rom, you get a message "hard drive not found.." you then have 2 options: This is also true if the bios cannot detect it)
  1. Remove and reinsert the hard drive, see if it finds it again in windows
  2. If it does not, i'm afraid that the hard drive as died

Have an older T23 IBM Thinkpad. Was running Malwarebyts which I just loaded on the system due to a problem at work and wonted to make sure i was ok at home. System ran for aprox 32 min and apeard to lock...

This is a possibility, the T23 is a very old laptop.
Normal 0 Check the BIOS to see if the hard disk is detected, if not open then re-seat the hard drive.
If the BIOS does not detect this hard drive, then the hard drive is probably faulty.

If it was me, I would not waste my time and money trying to get a new hard drive for this ThinkPad.
Disk drive manufacturers do not make small capacity hard drive anymore and the current range of hard drives won't work in your ThinkPad because the BIOS cannot support these hard drives.

Hard drive spins, but computer and screen don't boot

Hello,
I am not sure if I have a solutions more so than a suggestion. I have done many notebook repairs and one thing that I make sure my techs do is NOT to shock the motherboard (Static, ESD) A simple shock can destroy the video, sound, wireless, and even the hard drive controller. I would check with the company that replaced your LCD and ask if they had trouble with your notebook after the install. Minus the LCD, my first guess would have been to upgrade your memory (maybe), defrag your hard drive and test parts on a good pc. Worst case: replace the motherboard or replace the notebook.

Good Luck

Replacement DVD-ROM drive

Hi there.
get hold of a boot cd or a windows install disk, set the boot options to boot from the cd drive, if the cd or dvd starts to boot and you get windows loading window then chances are that the lens on the drive is dirty and need cleaning, its also a possibility that the hard drive has bad sectors on it so setup can't write to the disk, hirens boot cd is a usefull tool to check for and recover bad sectors.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!!
