Did you try to disengage the safety feature that should shut the tractor off when the blades are engaged and the tractor is placed in reverse? I believe that it is located under the shift leaver

according to the info i have this tractor has a disengage to prevent mowing in reverse, the blades should stop in reverse, meaning the pto should stop and have to be reset. i dont see a mention of reverse overide switch. are the springs for the idler pulley on the deck hooked up and is the belt good and right length. if so you have a bad clutch or as i said before a saftey switch.

This is a safety feature that is not that hard to do so i say live with it.You do'nt have to hold it up just pull it up before you start backing up and once your moveing you can let go without it shutting off the deck until the pedel returns to neutral again, all tractor have it by law after a certain date so jumping around it is niot a good idea.
