First place to start is to check the brushes on the motor. These are carbon rods which settle on the centre of the motor and drive it using an electrical charge from the board. To do this yourself you need to
Turn off power
Place machine on its side but ensure its soapbox down to avoid excess water from the box leaking onto the main control board
I have never worked on a roper but I would imagine the motor should be visible from the base of the machine
On the motor you should see a plastic case on each side with 2 screws in each
These are your brushes
Unscrew and unplug them keeping note of the angle that they sit on the motor (very important)
The brushes top the sits on the motor should be shiny and clean. If it looks dull and is very small (less than 1cm) then they need replacing

SOURCE: Washer won't drain

Mustache, sounds like you have a broken lid switch. No spin, no drain usually a sign of this. Check to see if the actuator is making the lid switch, or the switch itself is bad. Part number for the switch is 8318084. Catriver, post back.

You may need to replace agitator dogs located inside the agitator or the drive coupler located above the motor. It dependis on which model you have.

SOURCE: Roper top loading washer not spinning or agitating

Hi

If your washer pumps out the water but doesn't spin, check these:

  • The lid switch may be defective. If it is, the washing machine doesn't spin. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.

  • The motor coupler may be broken. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. You may need to replace it.

  • A belt may be broken. Many washing machines have one or two belts. If a belt is broken or badly worn, you need to replace it with a genuine belt from the manufacturer. (Some washing machine belts are designed with special characteristics not found in automotive belts.)

  • The clutch may be worn. As the clutch wears out, it may prevent the unit from spinning well or at all. If the clutch is worn, you need to replace it. For this job, you probably want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician.

  • The drive motor may be defective. Many washer brands use a reversing motor. For agitation the motor runs in one direction, for spinning and draining, the other. It's possible for a motor to burn out in one direction and continue to operate in the other. If this happens, you need to replace the entire motor.

  • The transmission may not be shifting properly. If the shifter becomes even partially defective, the unit may drain the water but not spin. This is a complex system, if your washer has a shifter problem, you may want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician to repair it.

  • The spin bearing or basket drive may be worn or seized. These components allow the inner tub to spin freely inside the outer tub. When this is the problem, you usually hear a loud sound during the spin cycle. Call a qualified appliance repair technician.
If your washer doesn't agitate, check these:

Lid switch If the lid switch is defective, the washing machine may not agitate or function at all. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.

Motor coupler Many washers produced by Whirlpool® use a small, relatively inexpensive motor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. If this happens, you need to completely replace it.

Belts Many washing machines have one or two belts. If a belt is broken or badly worn, you need to replace it with a genuine belt from the manufacturer. (Some washing machine belts are designed with special characteristics not found in automotive belts.)

Drive motor Many washer brands use a reversing motor. For agitation the motor runs in one direction, for spinning and draining, the other. It's possible for a motor to burn out in one direction and continue to operate in the other. If this happens, you need to replace the entire motor.

Drive pulleys The motor or transmission drive pulley may be worn and unable to turn the drive belt. If so, replace the pulley.

Transmission The transmission could have either of these problems:

  • Older washers produced by Whirlpool® have a transmission with an electro-mechanical shifter. If the shifter becomes even partially defective, the unit may not agitate properly or at all.

  • The transmission may have a worn or broken gear, or some other internal problem.

If you suspect a transmission problem, you may have to call a qualified appliance repair technician to repair it.

Agitator The inside of the agitator--where the transmission shaft attaches--can become worn, and strip out the spline that allows the agitator to properly grip the shaft. Then the transmission shaft rotates back and forth as it should, but the agitator doesn't move properly. If this happens, you may need to replace the agitator and/or the transmission spline.

SOURCE: ROPER MODEL RAX7245JQ0 WILL FILL AGITATO, DRAIN

Most of these spin related problems are attributed to a lid switch malfunction. A washer that fills and doesn't do anything, or stops right after the wash cycle and then does not advance to the rinse cycle and drain is commonly caused by a lid switch. The lid switch is usually mounted under the washer top casing, on the right hand side on most top load models. It is activated by a plastic piece on the lid (called a "Lid Strike") through a small hole on the rim of the wash tub opening. In many cases the lid strike breaks off the lid, or the lid switch becomes loose and no longer makes contact. Inspect the lid to make sure the lid strike is still intact, and then inspect the mounting screws (adjacent to the small opening on the wash tub rim) and make sure they are snug. If you determine the switch to be defective, the following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385198-replacing_lid_switch

If the switch requires replacement, a new one can be purchased on line at searspartsdirect.com, pcappliancerepair.com, repairclinic.com, appliancepartspros.com. Just use your model number as your search criteria. All these sites offer competitive pricing, so shop all them for the best price.

Let me know if you have any questions. I hope this helps you.

SOURCE: Roper RAX7245KQ Washer agitator does not rotate

If you are talking about the upper portion of the agitator (called the "auger") not spinning, you probably need to replace the agitator dogs. The following link epxlains how:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r823955-replacing_agitator_dogs

This is a very simple and inexpenisve repair. The part number is included in the information I provided.

If the washer will fill and drain, but won't agitate or spin, you may have a broken motor coupling. The noise of the motor engaging, lack of agitation and ability to still drain are the usual symptoms. This is a common fail item with this model washer through normal wear and tear. Newer versions of the coupler are more resilient and resist breaking. The following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385250-replacing_motor_coupling_kenmore_top

The motor coupling is located between the drive motor and the transmission and takes the place of a drive belt. They do wear out and can break. The replacement part number is included in the link I provided and is an improved upgraded coupling that is more resilient. It should last longer. If you have questions, or require additional assistance, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

A replacement coupler can be purchased on line at appliancepartspros.com for about $11. Just use the part number in the link and "Search by Part Number" for your search criteria.

Take note of your symptoms:

1. Washer fills, may or may not agitate, will not advance to the rinse cycle, and will NOT drain - lid switch.

2. Washer fills, does NOT agitate or spin, but WILL drain - motor coupling.

If you still have questions, please let me know. I hope this information is helpful to you.

I have a NEW Roper Washer. It agitates somewhat slowly. My old washer agitated FAST. Is this normal for a Roper?

I would have a look at the cam dogs located in the agitator and the motor coupler or belt if not direct drive. check for loose clutch or slipping tranny. also check for worn agitator spline

Sm8280871 washer. How do you take agitator out?

Are you sure this is a model number? It looks more like a Serial number. Model should be on a tag with serial number. Usually starts with letters then about 4 numbers and more letters. Providing that would likely get you better assistance.

Washer won't run to do wash cycle

Don't worry about that "fuzzy little belt" ;) I mean - just toss it.
If the motor runs but the agitator is not agitating - check the coupling, the two plastic thingies and a piece of rubber between transmission and motor.
If it will not do anything after filling up - the problem is electrical, and it can be anything from the water level switch to timer to motor... The schematic diagram is inside the control panel. To open the panel remove 2 phillips screws holding control panel's side plastic caps. The screws are in the back. Good luck! %)

If the agitator does not spin at all, then it is your motor coupling. If the agitator tries to spin but cannot, then it is your dog agitators.
