If this only happens when you are copying.

1. Your scanner glass is dirty. Open the lid, use windex to clean the flatbed. Look on the left side. You should see a strip of glass, with the scanner sitting under it. This strip is used when the document feed is being used. Make sure it is clean. Most common problem is getting a little whiteout or the sticky residue from scotch tape on this glass, which causes lines down your copies.

Clean it with alcohol which will dissolve the sticky stuff and the whiteout.

If this does not solve the problem, the CCD scanner in your machine might be going bad.

We are going to attempt to do a "power purge" to get rid of any clogged ink nozzles. Note, this will probably eat up about half of your ink, but that is the price you must pay in order to attempt to fix this bad boy.

1) Get into maintenance mode. Press these keys: Menu -> Black Start -> Scan x4 (hit it four times). A number pad should come up. If not, do it again.

2) Hit key 7, then key 6.

3) Press the right key until you get to "CLEANING BLACK."

4) Press 3.

5) Press Black Start.

After it purges and gets back to the main maintenance screen, press keys 9 and 9.

Let your printer start back up. If this does not work, try the above steps up to three times. If it does not work then, you need a new print head, which is not a user-replaceable part on this model.

Good luck.

Open door
press Clear/Back key
press *00
press OK

Do not choose anything for drum replacement. when drum replacement menu comes up, just press the * and then 00, then just press OK.

that should clear the error message, the printer has a toner life counter that needs to be reset.

Hi Wendy,

This is known issue with Canon printers. Try the steps below.

Instructions
    • 1

Remove all of the paper from the paper tray and slide the paper guides all the way to the side. Examine the paper for any crumpled or torn pieces, then reload the tray. Make sure the guides fit snugly against the sides of the paper. If the guides are too loose, the paper can feed into the iP1600 skewed and cause a paper jam. If the guides are too tight it can cause the printer to grab more than one piece of paper.

    • 2

Open the front of the printer and wait for the print cartridges to move to the center. Do not move the cartridges by hand--this could damage the printer and void your warranty.

      • 3

Pull the cartridges slightly toward you and lift them free of the printer. Set the cartridges aside.

      • 4

Wipe the interior of the printer with a soft cloth to remove any ink residue and paper dust. The Pixma iP1600 has a tendency to accumulate a lot of paper dust, especially during periods of heavy use. Cleaning the printer periodically is the best way to avoid problems.

      • 5

Dip a cotton swab in warm water and carefully clean the bottom of each print cartridge. The print cartridges in the iP1600 printer also tend to accumulate paper dust. In addition the print nozzles can become clogged with ink residue, resulting in poor print quality and shortening the life of the cartridges. Continue wiping the cartridges until all ink residue and paper dust have been removed.

How to clean ink cartridges HP deskjet printers

You need the following items to clean the print cartridges:

    • Distilled water (tap water can contain contaminants that
    can damage the print cartridge)
    • Cotton swabs or other soft, lint-free material that will not stick
    to the print cartridge

Be careful not to get ink on your hands or clothing as you clean.

    To prepare to clean

    1. Open the HP Deskjet cover.
    2. Wait until the print cartridge cradle moves to the
center of the HP Deskjet and is idle and quiet.
    3. Remove the print cartridges and place them on a piece
of paper, with the copper strips facing up.

CAUTION: Do not leave the print cartridges outside the HP Deskjet for more than 30 minutes.
To manually clean print cartridge contacts

    1. Lightly moisten a cotton swab with distilled water and
squeeze any excess water from the swab.
    2. Gently wipe the print cartridge copper contacts with the cotton swab.

CAUTION: Do not touch the print cartridge ink nozzles. Touching the ink nozzles will result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

1 Ink nozzles (do not touch) 2 Copper contacts
    3. Repeat this process until no ink residue or dust appears on the swab.
    4. Insert the print cartridges in the HP Deskjet, and then close the cover.

Windows test page, Windows logo is in gray scale and not completely printed. Alignment page has failed several times, Restart, cleaned cartridges several times.

You didn't mention the brand and model of your printer.

However, it seems that you have a clogged print head. If you are using canon or hp, some of their models have print heads fixed to its cartridge. In this case, simply buy a new cartridge.

Not all heads are fixed to the cartridge. In some models, you have to acquire them separately.

You can also try the "poorman's solution":

Remove the head, then dip ONLY the bottom part where the ink comes out in warm water for five minutes.

Just be sure NOT to TOUCH or WET the gold contacts on the side.

Shake it to remove the excess water. Do not wipe it with cloth or tissue. This may leave residues that could clog.

    Sometimes, this thing works.

Blotchy excess red toner left on side of page.

My first instinct would be to call the people who serviced it and have them check it out for you. If you don't have time for that then the next and slightly more expensive solution is to replace the magenta toner cartridge. My reasoning for this is if you get them to come out and explain that it is since they cleaned it then they can pay for the replacement cartridge, or clean it again. But I think that if the new cartridge does not solve the problem, then during the cleaning the tech made a magenta mess somewhere in the printer. I hope this helps.

"c6100" what brand? HP I guess. Well I suppose you set the printer to see the black cartridge as a new one! What light blinks? You might have to change the collor cartridge too! try that! For how long do you have the printer? It may have a full residual ink memory issue!

    Printer Problem

remove the cartridge and make sure that all of the blue tape came off and that it didn't leave any sticky residue.

    Did this fix it"
If not, did you replace the cartridge because of red being out? The ribbon cable (the flat tape that flex's as the head moves back and forth) might be damaged. Check for sharp kinks or loose connections.
