Question about Verbatim Acclaim 750GB Portable USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

Hi there, I am having problems with my brand new Verbatim Hard drive. I cant find the paperwork but the model is 64119 Verbatim 1TB. It was working fine for the last two months and I have just started to actually use it more often and now when I plug it into the usb port it says "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." I also tried it in another computer. My laptop is a mac book pro and the other comp I tried it in was also Mac. It used to work fine and now it is not being read. I have a lot of important things on it. Is there anything I can do to fix the problem without losing my files. The other problem is I purchased it in Australia and have now moved overseas.. so to take it back will be rather difficult.

SOURCE: external hard drive doesn't respond

Shut your computer down. Disconnect you external hardrive. Power up your computer again. Power up the Verbatim and then connect to a USB port. You should hear a very quiet 'ping'.

Go to My Computer, and the Verbatim should be showing as one of your drives (probably Drive D). You should be able to open it from there.

Make sure that you have a Desk Top Icon for opening the hardrive, it makes it so much easier. Hope this helps

SOURCE: USB external hard drive does not show up on OS X desktop

You need to be sure that it is formatted as a FAT32 drive and not as a NTFS. When you are in Vista right click on the drive icon and click on properties. You will see NFTS or FAT32 under file system. Your drive must be FAT32 to be recognized by a Mac. Iomega.com has a FAT32 formatting software that you can download for free on your Vista PC and re-format the drive as a FAT32 drive.

SOURCE: usb devise not recognised

You probably damaged the drive from sudden disconnection of the signal line. I would suggest trying it on one other computer before considering it trashed.

You have to partition your Verbatim Drive to work on a Mac. Go to Macintosh HD / Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility. When in Disk Utility select the 232.9 GB SAMSUNG HM250HI Media to the left.

use the source (pc/Mac) that created the data to remove it.
you will need to re-format to get it to work on the machine you are currently trying to use.
(personally I always remove all partitions and format to "fat" (remove factory) this will make the drive work on Mac as well as pc)

hope this helps

I have a verbatim 2gb that cant be read sometimes it can sometimes not.

When it can be read, copy all the files onto your 'C:' drive.

Then, take a sledge-hammer to the Verbatim, to make sure that NOBODY will ever be able to read any files from it. Then, responsibly recycle it.

Spend $10 to buy a new 2GB device.

Verbatim drive regularly does not show up as available. I have to unplug it and try to get it to reset. do you know how to fix?

Hello!
I checked the Verbatim website for common Windows/USB drive problems. Since I don't know your exact model the information I'm giving is pretty general, but from the Verbatim website it looked like something that could help.

For one, Verbatim says you don't need drivers for your drive to work, but if you're having issues installing their driver might help. Go to their website (Verbatim.com) and in the top left go to "Support". From there you should be able to enter your model and download drivers. The installation instructions are usually on the same page.

The second potential fix is to increase the USB power to the drive. The Verbatim site says that some of their drives require plugging into 2 USB ports to get enough power to run the drive. If this is the case for your drive, you should've gotten a USB cable that is shaped like a "Y". The two wires at the "top" of the "Y" go into two USB ports on your computer. It also said that if even you didn't get the cable you could still be having power issues. You'll have to go to the Support section of the site and enter your model number to see if this could still be the problem.

Good luck! Remember to rate the responses you get!
