13.5 hp Craftsman riding mower starts, and immediately starts pouring out tons of Black smoke. It will runs for 30 seconds to 3 or more minutes and eventually dies. Recently overfilled the with oil so I drained gas contaminated oil and refilled with 48 oz's of 30W as required. I pulled and cleaned new plug and turned the engine over for 15 sec and replaced. It sounds like the float is sticking. you may need to clean carb and change the float needle and seat

SOURCE: Craftsman riding mower starts, then runs for 30

The smoke is oil going in to the combustion chamber, will have to check for broken rings or piston. also if the tractor was stored in a position that the oil would run to the combustion chamber it will do that untill all the oil is burn

SOURCE: Craftsman riding mower starts rides a few minutes then stops

Make sure that when you check the oil that the mower has sat I say for at least 5mins. Your mower might have an oil sencer. If not I think it might be the coil gettin hot and shorting out.

I have a Craftsman mower. Last year I had a similar problem with the mower stopping after running awhile. I noticed that the plastic gas tank was collapsing. The next time it began to stall, I immediately loosened the gas cap and it didn't stall. The vent holes in the cap had plugged up. Check this out.
I can't help you locate the fuel leak, although it sounds like the carburetor float is not stopping gas from flowing into the carburetor.

Pour vinigar and hot pepper sparkles into the gas tank and mix it with the gas. Then start it- the differance in the way it runs will be very noticable!

The black smoke is too much fuel, it is flooding out. Carb issue, I would pull the float bowl and clean carb, the needle in carb is stuck open pumping too much gas in.

2 year old craftsman 42" deck tractor runs fine for 15 minutes then sputters and dies. Will start, run 2-3 minutes, die again. Leave sit will run for 20 minutes.

if it restarts immediately, check the vent in the gas cap for restriction. also, the solenoid on the bottom of the carburetor may be sticking or getting weak. if you have to let it sit for awhile before it retarts, the ignition module may be breaking down when it heats up. i'd bet on the gas cap or solenoid though

Not getting gas to combustion chamber, leaking gas from exhaust

Definitely the carburetor. Take it off and look for something clogged. Look carefully at the gaskets. Look for water and dirt in the float bowl.
