I have a Honeywell thermostat and the fan runs continuously. Not sure if need to set on Auto fan and Auto Heat or what.

Hello Donna,
You are right. The Auto setting will allow the fan to shut off when the fan is no longer needed.

Fan on millermatic250 mig welder doesnt stay on all the time should it?

The fan does not run continuously. It only runs when it needs to. It depends on the work load of the welder. Short runs do not cause it to heat up enough to close the contacts for the fan. The longer welds will create the heat in the coil to rise enough to close the contacts and make the fan run.

My mpc labtop over heating when tune on it. what is the problem?

If you touch the laptop while it is running & you find it too hot, make sure that the fan is running properly & that the air ways are not blocked.
You can blow compressed air into the cooling vents of the fan. If you notice clouds of dust coming out, then it might be a good idea to disassemble the laptop, clean the fan & air ways, & reassemble it back. If the fan has failed & is no longer running, it might need to be replaced.

CPU fan error at boot.. Spin fan manually at power up and it works. Why is this? Fan continues to run just fine until computer is powered down

The fan needs to be replaced. When you provide the "umph" to start the fan, it is able to continue by itself. The exposure to heat and the accumulation of dust and dirt has begun to interfere with its ability to start from a stopped position.

The fan should be replaced with an identical fan - preferably from a new CPU heat sink. Do not replace the entire heat sink unless you are prepared to clean the CPU and apply new thermal grease, etc. It is far easier (and probably just as good) to replace the fan only by removing both the old and new fans and swapping out.

Eventually, starting the fan by hand will no longer allow the fan to run by itself. It is better to make the repair now than have the fan fail and cause the CPU to over heat - possibly catastrophically.

Good luck!

Where is the location of the fan heat sensor to turn the fan on when it gets hot on a 2002 Sunfire 2.2 engine ?

Both the 2.2 and 2.4 liter engines use the computer to turn the fan control relay on and off. The computer gets it's temperature information from a coolant temp sensor that is dedicated just to telling the computer what the coolant temperature is. There isn't a seperate sensor or switch just for the cooling fans on either engine. It's very rare for the coolant temp sensor to fail and when they do there is almost always a corresponding performance problem as the computer no longer knows how cold or warm the engine is and will turn on the "check engine" warning lamp and set a corresponding service code. If the fans aren't working I would look first for a blown fan fuse [usually 30 amps or larger] or you could possibly have a bad fan motor. When working properly these cooling fans don't come on until the engine reaches about 218 degrees and then go off again as the temperature drops to about 210. The fan should come on anytime you have the a/c running while the vehicle is sitting & running as it needs the fan to run to remove heat from the a/c system. Once the vehicle is over about 35 mph the fan rarely comes on as enough air is being forced through the radiator and condensor to cool everything properly.

My hp media center m7160n computer powers up, has a definite fan sound, normally the fan sound diminishes and the computer boots up. For the last several months, the high speed fan sound would not diminish...

How did you clean it?
The last one I worked on had the fins of the Heat sink totally blocked with dust. This will make the fan scream trying to push air thru the heat sink to cool the processor. If it isn't cooled it will shut down in short order.
You must BLOW it out. Use a pressurized air can. Better if you have a compressor with a nozzle.

The other issue may be the interface between the CPU and heat sink is defective. Heat sink moved or become loose.

Of course by this time the processor could be dead also.

The fan on my vaio goes off every 15 seconds and seems fairly noisy, people can hear it over a webcam and it keeps my roommate up at night. Is there something wrong?

Depending on the age of your computer, it may need a cleaning. Over time the fans and heat sinks collect dust and do not lose heat as effectively. This causes the fan to run more frequently, faster, and longer. If your computer is more than two years old or you have pets I would recommend you get it inspected for clogs or failing fans. This is the condition that might cause damage to your computer.

Also check for programs that are running and have processor usage spikes that match the fan noise. You can use the windows task manager to do this.

If you don't use that application overnight you might consider closing it and only starting it when you need it. Reply if you would like more information :)

Fan runs after car shut off

You may need to replace your thermostat. This is normal for the fan to run after you turn your car off but if you say its running for 20 minutes or longer, it may mean your thermostat is stuck and causing the fan to run longer to cool off the radiator. Its a good thing for the fan to run. Heat is your enemy. I rather the fan run than no fan at all, if your car overheats, you could blow a gasket or warp your valves and its really pricey if that happens
