Question about Compaq (166361-001) Motherboard

2 Answers

I have a Seagate 60 Gb drive which I have connected to two machines running xppro sp3. On each machine it shows as 31Gb. I go into DiskManagaement and delete the only partition (no unallotted space) and go to install a new partition and max available is 31Gb. Both computers are running 250Gb HDD so its not a bios problem and there is no physical switch on the drive which can be used to limit size to 32Gb to overcome a bios limitation. How do I access the full capacity of the 60 Gb hdd?? Any help appreciated.

It has been connected to two machines at different times. It is not possible to connect to 2 computers at the same time afaik.

I have since been reminded that the disk was once used on an old computer where the bios limited HDD to 32Gb and a DDO from Seagate was used to fool the bios into recognising this disk.

I suggest you try the SeaGate software. There is probably a firmware switch.

What interface are you using to connect this to two machines at once?

Check the jumper...sounds like it is in the "cap limit" (31gig) pos.

Surely this is a firmware problem that seagate usually has, sometimes the drive cannot be detcted by the pc or even bios, and sometimes the drive detcted by the pc as 0GB or less capacity, you should find a tool such as HD Doctor for Seagate to repair it.Or you can go 2 a DR company to rewrite the firmware.

How do I find my folders with multiple file types (stored on a second Drive E:) using XP SP3, now that I boot from a different C: drive?

Have you checked to see if these hardrives have a jumper on master or slave? It's a small white or black piece that connects two pins in the hard drive. Sata drives won't have pins or jumpers

also consider plugging the drive into an IDE to USB cable and plug into a system with a different operating system. Or look up a program called r studio. it's one of the better file recovery software out there. It also recovers in "original file/older structure" which you are trying to do.

is your machine using sata drives or older IDE drives?

How do I find the folders with the files intact on a secondary internal drive, so I can move and back them up to the C: drive and an external drive?

This is an XP machine, which is no longer supported. I recommend backing up your personal data asap, and plan on moving to a newer machine and OS. After you get the newer machine, you could purchase a USB Hard Drive Adaptor, pull out the old hard drive(s), and copy any important files to the newer machine. Good luck.

When I try to format my seagate expansion portable drive 500GB the error message appeared is : windows was unable to complete the format. Is there any solution to this problem?

Hello,

If you are connecting this drive to your machine with firewire while you are trying to format it try connecting it to your machine with USB. If it formats okay that way you can connect it to your machine with firewire again after the formatting is complete.

Also make sure you have set the formatting process for the correct file system. For example FAT32 or NTFS.

Also, you did not mention which operating system you are using. For example a computer running Windows Millenium will not format many of these drives at all.

yah you must buy a Y-USB cable for your external hardisk. this is connection both ends are one is for hardisk and the other two cable is for USB slot of computer. why it two wires connection to usb because one wire is for Data and the other is for Power. If doesn't work..it might be a problem in your Operating system. i recommend to you to reinstall your Windows OS.. theres a 4 reasons why it happen appear the error... deffective USB cable..corrupted driver of USB device for seagate, virus infected of your systems..and maybe your hardive is deffective. Reduced Hard Drive Capacity with Internal to External Kit

Problem can be tricky.. though i offer my two cents.

1. some BIOS have upper limit of hard disk capacity. check that out. try connecting IDE device to IDE connector in same comp and see if it is being detected properly.

2. seagate guys are true .. IDE to usb conversion can be tricky ... a lot depends on card convertor.

my advice would be if you have precious data on it ... first take a backup of it, if possible connecting the disk to nomal ide connector.

Hi Bijay.
Neither is at fault. Please click on this Seagate link:

Scroll down to: Partitioning the drive in Windows XP / Windows 2000 (for systems where this is the 2nd drive in the system).
Follow the instruction on the web site.
This Seagate web site will help you setup the Seagate 160 drive.

If you feel the drive is still at fault you can run Seagate’s SeaTools. Click on the next link:
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools
This software will check the 160GB drive.
(Follow the online instructions for), SeaTools for DOS.

In a Windows XP system & using a FAT 32 & a cluster size of 16kb instead of NTFS. Windows will see the total size of the drive but can only access 149GB of drive space. 11GB of drive space will be used by the FAT. File Allocation Table. The FAT is windows guide to every cluster on the drive.
XP uses NTFS & sets each cluster to 4kb. This 4kb size lowers the total usable GB size & uses more GB's for the FAT. You're 127GB size may be correct for a Win XP system using a NTFS file system. The FAT is using 33GB of drive space as a locator for every cluster on the 160GB drive.
Help with understanding the NTFS file system: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/expert/russel_october01.mspx

Bijay if you are still having trouble understanding please post any questions here.

Good luck!
Mike
